Intelligence Officers
Can anyone here tell me what a female intelligence officer does during a war? I am mainly looking for information on the Marine Corps and the Navy. Also, how hard is it to become an intelligence officer in each branch? I was told it was somewhat hard to go into the Navy as an intelligence officer. Is that true?

3. Went There Before
Thank You, but I went there before and was looking for a little more specific information. I know that women are not allowed on the front line, but I was wondering if a female intelligence officer would be in a building or if she would be going outside into houses. I was wondering what she would do to get the intelligence information she got.

4. Women are no longer banned from front lines
They are still banned from certain specific combat jobs.

Intell is tough to get into because it's one of the few non-combat related jobs that can be a promotion fast track for officers so many apply, few are selected. Second, contrary to the cliche about military intelligence being an oxymoron, its entry level requirements are fairly stiff.

I don't understand what you mean by "female intelligence officer would be in a building or if she would be going outside into houses."

6. What I Meant
I was asking if women went into the houses of the Iraqis to ask them questions? I may have had the wrong idea, but I had seen a women go into an Iraqi house and ask the residents questions? So I was wondering if female intelligence officers did that. Thank you for all the information.

9. You're welcome
As RiDuvessa pointed out, if the men are doing something (exception the banned MOS), the women are, too. The days when women were restricted from certain functions within the MOS are long gone.

10. Some units take women along to try to calm the women and children...
during searches.

And, a lot of language specialists are women.

2. Depends on the circumstances and the war
The first batch of women navy officers, commissioned in WWII were recruited from the Seven Sisters, the list of names and qualifications went across Eleanor Roosevelt's desk - and she crossed some out - were specifically for intelligence. They're the ones that spent the war cracking the codes on Nevada Ave. in NW Washington. I know a few of them.

5. Female intelligence officers do the same thing as males.
At least in the Navy. For example, as a first tour, you could be assigned to an aviation squadron. Then you would analyze the intelligence and pictures brought back from missions. You would brief pilots on threats in the area, and other such things. You could be assigned to a ship, and then you would be analyzing pictures and intelligence gathered from sonar and satellites. you would give briefs. Junior intelligence officers give lots of briefs.

It is VERY difficult to get selected as an intelligence officer in the Navy. Pretty much forget it if you don't have at least a 3.8 GPA out of college. It's a popular tract because it has good advancement rates, and is very versatile. You can go just about anywhere and do just about anything.

Just about the only thing a female Naval intelligence officer can't do is work with the Seals or EOD.
