Soldier's Murder Trial Postponed
Soldier's Murder Trial Postponed

Knight Ridder/Tribune

LIGONIER, Pa. - A preliminary hearing for a Soldier accused of killing a retired businessman in his home has been delayed while defense lawyers update their certifications from the state Supreme Court to handle death penalty cases.

Westmoreland County Public Defender Dante Bertani said he and two of his assistants, attorneys Greg Cecchetti and John Sweeney, will travel to Harrisburg later this week to attend continuing education classes in preparation for their defense of Anthony Blaine Mowry.

Mowry, 18, formerly of Unity, is charged with first-degree murder for the slaying of 75-year-old William McMichael Jones. Jones' body was found around 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 17 when firefighters arrived to extinguish a blaze in his apartment at the historic Morgan House.

Mowry's preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Friday, has been postponed until Nov. 20 before Ligonier District Judge Denise Thiel.

Mowry is accused of beating Jones with chimes from a grandfather clock, a candlestick and his fists before stabbing him.
