Rear Adm. Anthony M. Kurta has been selected to serve as the next commander of Combined Joint Task Force—Horn of Africa, according to a news release issued Friday by the Pentagon.
Kurta, who is currently director for policy, resources and strategy for U.S. Naval Forces–Europe in Naples, Italy, replaces Rear Adm. Phillip Greene. Kurta had previously replaced Greene at his Naples post.
Kurta, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981, has commanded numerous ships in tours through Europe and the Pacific, according to a biography posted on the Navy’s Web site. He earned a master’s degree from Georgetown University and completed a National Security Fellowship at Harvard University.
CJTF-HOA is headquartered at Camp Lemonier in Djibouti. It includes troops from all U.S. services and engages in military training and humanitarian missions in 13 African countries.
Camp Lemonier, a former outpost of the French Foreign Legion, has been the home of the task force since May 2003. It has grown steadily since the U.S. began leasing the land and now houses about 2,000 servicemembers and civilians.Rest of Africom article at:
