The National Security Cutter Waesche powered up the first of its C4ISR equipment kicking off the ship’s electronics test program, Lockheed Martin announced Thursday.

The cutter successfully started its major Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance systems, including all 28 electronics cabinets.

“Waesche will sail with a highly sophisticated, proven system, which will aid the Coast Guard in carrying out missions efficiently and effectively to protect our nation,” Paul Klammer, director of Coast Guard C4ISR programs for Lockheed Martin, said in a statement. “The electronics light-off is a significant event as we move into the system test phase.”

The 418-foot cutter is the second in its class. It is being built at the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding’s Pascagoula shipyard though it is equipped with Lockheed Martin’s electronic equipment. It was christened July 25, just before the Aug. 5 commissioning of its sister-ship the Bertholf.

“This is the second time around aboard a national security cutter ... and, as always, practice makes perfect. Everything is going smoothly,” Lockheed spokeswoman Kimberly Martinez said.
