9-year prison term upheld for colonel

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A nine-year prison sentence has been upheld for an Air Force colonel convicted of forcing himself on a woman, misusing his government travel card and other crimes at Sheppard Air Force Base.

In June, Col. Samuel Lofton III was convicted of 34 counts, including indecent assault, conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, larceny, being absent without leave and dereliction of duty.

He also was acquitted of several charges, including rape.

Lofton also was ordered to forfeit all his pay and benefits and received the equivalent of a dishonorable discharge, effective after he serves his time. Jurors fined the former training commander $14,000 or said he would face an additional year behind bars.

Although Lofton was immediately sent to a military prison, the 2nd Air Force commander had to review Lofton’s penalty. Maj. Gen. Alfred Flowers, based at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, could not increase the sentence or change the innocent verdicts.
