A Marine noncommissioned officer who served in Iraq died in a hit-and-run accident early Friday morning outside of Albany, Ga., authorities said.

Sgt. Chadwick H. House, 24, of Carrolton, Ga., was killed Sept. 26 after being struck by a semi-truck, according to the Dougherty County Police Department. He served as a warehouse NCO at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, base officials said.

The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. while House was walking along a stretch of dark country road, according to Police Chief Donald Cheek. He said House was walking from a friend’s home after a night of drinking, but authorities are awaiting lab results to determine if the victim was drunk at the time of the accident.

House had left without telling his friends where he was going and he may have been on the phone at the time of the accident, Cheek said. Authorities have subpoenaed the phone records.

Cheek said it’s possible the semi driver was unaware the vehicle struck a pedestrian.
