Committee OKs Donley as Air Force Secretary
Committee OKs Donley as Air Force Secretary

The Senate Armed Services Committee voted Friday to approve the nomination of Michael B. Donley to become Air Force secretary, clearing the way for him to be confirmed by the full Senate soon.

Donley has been serving as acting secretary since June 21, the day after Michael W. Wynne stepped down as secretary.

President Bush nominated Donley for the position on June 26, but his confirmation was held up in committee in late July.

At the time, sources gave conflicting reasons for the delay.

A Pentagon source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., was holding up the nomination because of the Air Force’s mishandling of privatized housing projects that failed last year, leaving Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., and three other bases short on housing. Nelson’s office declined to comment.
