Nuclear reorganization still on the table
Nuclear reorganization still on the table

A proposal to reorganize the Air Force’s nuclear missions and its entire bomber force under Air Force Space Command remains a possibility, said a senior Air Force official close to nuclear matters.

A defense department task force headed by former Defense Secretary James Schlesinger recommended the sweeping reorganization after finding erosion throughout the Air Force’s nuclear enterprise.

Air Force leaders discussed the proposal at the service’s Nuclear Summit, where it wasn’t shot down. It remains an option that the service’s top generals will make a final decision upon when they meet for the annual Corona meetings.

“It’s clear that we have fragmentation of authority across the Air Force nuclear enterprise,” the official said. “One of the significant ways to improve that is to concentrate those authorities in as few places as necessary in order to improve that unity of effort.”
