Both the active Army and the National Guard have met their recruiting goals for August, but the Reserve missed its goal by 2 percent, the Defense Department announced Wednesday.

The active Army reported 10,093, 101 percent of 10,000. The National Guard reported 5,807, about 100 percent of its 5,785 goal.

The Reserve however failed to meet its goal as it did in July. The Reserve reported 3,107, 98 percent of its 3,177 goal.

Compared to the active Army and the National Guard, the Reserve has had sporadic success in recruiting so far in fiscal 2008. Since the beginning of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, 2007, the Reserve has also fallen short if its goals for October, November, January, and June.

The active force has met every one of its recruiting goals this fiscal year and the National Guard only fell short in May because the Army’s leadership directed it to scale back on its recruiting efforts.
