Keesler airmen ordered to return by Friday

It is back to work at Keesler Air Force Base on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

On Tuesday morning, base officials directed airmen who had left the area to escape Hurricane Gustav to be back at Keesler no later than Friday. More than 6,400 airmen and family members were told Sunday morning to evacuate the coastal area.

The 3,000 airmen who stayed at Keesler — including students and airmen needed for immediate recovery operations — got the all-clear to leave the base’s storm shelters Tuesday morning after inspections of the base found little damage.

Three years ago, Hurricane Katrina flooded much of Keesler’s family housing and flightline facilities.

Keesler is one of the Air Force’s primary training bases for enlisted airmen. It is also home to the Air Force Reserve’s WC-130J Hurricane Hunter airplanes.
