School of Advanced Warfighting applications accepted

Marine majors looking to hone their war fighting skills, travel the world and earn a master’s degree in less than a year can apply for a slot at the coveted joint Marine Corps School of Advanced Warfighting.

The school is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 program through its Web site, http://www.mcu.usmc.mil/csc/saw/index.htm. The 11-month course is taught at Marine Corps University in Quantico, Va.

“Students will learn decision-making in complex environments,” said Lt. Col. Alex Vohr, the school’s director. “They focus on how commanders and staff make decisions and plan campaigns to win the nation’s battles and wars.”

Vohr said only the most qualified majors will be accepted for the course. Last year, 150 officers competed for only 24 positions. Officers with a lieutenant colonel select rank are not eligible to apply.

“We quite honestly get the most competitive people applying,” Vohr said. “We take very, very good students, and we have to sort through a bunch of good applications to take them.”
