Two C-17s and two C-130s have landed at Tbilisi International Airport since Wednesday to deliver humanitarian supplies to Georgia as the Air Force plans to fly an additional two C-130s daily over the coming weeks as the Georgian government tries to rebuild following fighting between Georgian and Russian troops.
The cargo planes have taken off from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, loaded with pallets filled with cots, bed sheets and sleeping bags for homeless Georgians as well as medical supplies that include 1,200 pounds of antibiotics requested by the Georgian Ministry of Health.
Officials plan to fly exclusively to Tbilisi, where the Georgians and U.S. relief organizations then have distributed the aid, said Rear Adm. Steven J. Romano, European Command director of logistics.
Capt. Cory Cook piloted the first C-17 to land in Tbilisi on Wednesday loaded with relief supplies and European Command’s survey team.
He said before the flight that there were security concerns regarding flying into Georgia where Cook’s crew flew through southern Georgia into Tbilisi to avoid the breakaway regions to the north where the fighting has occurred.
