The Justice Department plans to sue five European companies for alleged bid-rigging in connection with the shipment of household goods of military members and Defense Department civilians between Europe and the U.S.
The lawsuit, which officials expect to file in July, takes up two earlier lawsuits filed by three whistle-blowers who allege a conspiracy to rig bids and fix prices in the transportation of household goods.
The alleged conspiracy is thought to have cost the government in excess of $100 million, said attorney Ann Lugbill, of the law firm Grant & Eisenhofer, which is representing two whistle-blowers in Europe who filed suit under the False Claims Act.
Justice Department officials also announced that it has reached a settlement with one of the companies previously named in the lawsuit, The Pasha Group of Corte Madera, Calif. The company will pay $13 million to the U.S. government.
A Belgian company and four German companies are named in the alleged conspiracy.
