A North Carolina lawmaker’s idea to have a moment of silence once a month in the House of Representatives to remember service members killed or wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan has been approved by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Pelosi said lawmakers will begin observing a moment of silence at the start of the legislative session as least once a month after Congress returns in June from the Memorial Day recess.

Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., a member of the House Armed Services Committee whose congressional district includes Camp Lejeune, came up with the idea.

“He was very pleased by Speaker Pelosi’s quick response,” said Jones spokeswoman Kathleen Joyce.

In a letter to Jones, Pelosi called it an “excellent” idea that she will apply on the first legislative day of the month.
