I got a letter from the VA 2day..

On the envelope just above my address had this..
"ENCLOSED IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS.
DO NOT THROW AWAY!"

Low & behold when I opened it..there was a nice form letter from Sec. Nicholson...and in the last paragraph came this..

"In accordance with current policy, the Internal Revenue Service has agreed to forward this letter because we do not have current addresses for all affected individuals. The IRS has not disclosed your address or any other tax information to us."

but the return address on the envelope is that of the DVA in Philly..not the IRS...I'm a lil' bit confused..

anyway, Vets....check yer mailbox 2day...or the next couple until it shows up.

2. I think it means...

...that the VA wrote the letters and then sent them to the IRS, who matched the names on the letters with their own tax records and then forwarded the letters on to the intended recipients. That way, the letters could get where they needed to go without the IRS passing details to the VA. Of course, its the VA that's looking for responses, not the IRS, so that's why the return envelope is addressed to the VA.

The IRS are just acting as a big mail merge operation.

3. I got a two pager telling me my info might be at risk

But I've always kept my address information as my home of record, which hasn't changed no matter where around the world I went for all those years. I don't recall seeing that paragraph, though. Maybe they did different mailings depending on the situation of the compromised individuals, or maybe I skimmed too quickly...??
