NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Army has agreed to pay a more than $6,500 penalty to settle hazardous waste violations at Fort Eustis.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced the settlement Monday.

During an April 2006 inspection of the base’s transportation center, the EPA found several containers not clearly labeled, including one holding methanol and others with cleaning solvents. Some of the containers also were left open.

The EPA also said the Army did not keep complete records of all leaks detected in underground storage tanks.
