Kunsan major will not face additional charges for skipping sentencing

SEOUL — A convicted Air Force rapist will not face charges for skipping his sentencing and prompting a 28-hour manhunt at Kunsan Air Base earlier this month, Kunsan spokesman Master Sgt. Sean Houlihan said Monday.

Maj. Mark Seldes, a Kunsan flight surgeon, was convicted Jan. 31 of raping a civilian employee at Kunsan, but didn’t show up in court the next day for his 8 a.m. sentencing hearing.

Kunsan’s security forces found him around noon on Feb. 2 walking near a main road on base.

The 7th Air Force public affairs office did not provide answers Monday to Stars and Stripes about why Seldes will not face additional charges and who made the decision.

Seldes was convicted of rape, adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman for raping a civilian employee in her dorm room in November 2006 after she had taken a sleeping medication.
