Millions allocated to fund Pacific projects

Pacific edition, Friday, February 15, 2008

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — Bases in Iwakuni and Sasebo, Japan, and on Guam will receive a combined $58.4 million to refurbish base housing, according to the 2009 Department of Defense budget.

Sasebo Naval Base will get the lion’s share of the defense funding, $47.9 million, for one of the largest housing renovation projects in the base’s history.

Guam will receive $1.6 million for repairs to flag-officer housing, according to the budget.

Iwakuni will get $8.9 million, enough to revitalize 72 enlisted family housing units. That will include repairing, painting and tiling all interior walls and ceilings; repairing cracked and broken areas of interior concrete sub-base; and repairing wiring and piping, the budget shows.

The funding, which will be begin in the new fiscal year starting Oct. 1, won’t cover every base renovation plan. Iwakuni is preparing to begin work on 96 units in the Monzen housing area at an estimated cost of $13 million, Master Sgt. John Cordero wrote in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes on Tuesday.
