CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The former top commander of combat troops at Camp Lejeune has been nominated by President Bush to be assistant commandant of the Marine Corps.

The Pentagon said Friday that Lt. Gen. James F. Amos was nominated to be the Marine assistant commandant and to be promoted to the four-star rank of general.

Amos was commander of about 50,000 troops in the II Marine Expeditionary Force at Lejeune. He was named two years ago to become the deputy commandant for combat development and integration and other posts.

The Pentagon also said Lt. Gen. Keith J. Stalder, current II MEF commander at Camp Lejeune, was nominated to be commander of Marines and their bases in the Pacific.
