Seeking a clearer vision on alcohol?
Seeking a clearer vision on alcohol?

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — It’s a common mental equation: People + alcohol = “good times.”

But this is fuzzy math, say people tied to Yokosuka’s new “Clear Vision” campaign — a movement aimed at reducing alcohol-related incidents at Yokosuka Naval Base.

“It’s a mind-set — that people need to drink to have a good time,” said campaign chairman Petty Officer 1st Class George Smythe. “We want to break that psychological thinking.”

Last year’s strategy, “None for the Road,” focused on preventing drinkers from getting behind the wheel. This year, Smythe hopes “alcohol deglamorization” will decrease the number of incidents, he said.

Alcohol-related incidents — from underage drinking to serious crimes — increased last year to 244 compared with 200 in 2006, Smythe said. There have been 18 incidents so far in 2008, he said.
