Poll question: Do you think that Powell and Rice are "Uncle Toms?"
I see a lot of DUers referring to them as "Uncle Toms." Well, my definition of an "Uncle Tom" is someone who, regardless of political affiliation, bashes the black race to find favor with racist whites. Ward Connerly is an Uncle Tom, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson (the former darling of FOX news) is an Uncle Tom. But I haven't seen any of those qualities in Powell or Rice. I don't agree with them politically, but it annoys me when people refer to them as "Uncle Toms." We are allowed to have different viewpoints without being pegged with that label.

2. Colin is a token, Condi is just plain evil
but neither are uncle toms (or aunt jemima)

They are just black Republicans. My black roommate says alan keyes is an uncle tom who wouldn't last 2 minutes in Detroit. how about him?

4. They may not directly or outwardly bash their own race,
but to support the leader of a vile movement as that of the Neo Conservatives, leaves them with just as much blood on their hands too.

It is one thing to differ on wedge issues such as abortion. It is entirely different to pander to a movement that harbors a thinly veiled layer of bigotry.

6. Completely agree with your assessment

Condi was teary eyed when Bush talked about her parents and her upbringing during the civil rights era. She allowed the world to believe that Bush is compassionate.

So to me, the blood on her hands drips as much or more because she should know better. MLK should have taught her that we must join hands together, not divide.

She is content to use her skin color to make the world believe that she represents the feelings of her race. She does not.

In my view, she represents the view of the Republican party.

I would not call her an Auntie Tom but I would call her a power hungry sister that should know better.

7. It's funny when you think that the bush family fortune is founded in Nazi
money.

Seriously....Prescott Bush made his fortune by trading with the Nazi's during WWII.

I think of Jesse Owens and Hitler, and then I think about Condi and Colon.

Condi and Colon aren't stupid...on the contrary, they're both very smart. They've gotta know this....they've gotta know that the repug party is steeped in racism.

It's not about different viewpoints on issues, it's about what the bush family represents as a whole, and for them to be smiling representatives of this to me is very telling.

I can understand black republicans...they agree with certain issues, but, if so, back McCain or someone who's family doesn't represent a dark history of repression, racism, back-door dealings, and civil rights leaders' assassinations.

bush is just going to use them for political purposes...they gotta know that.

8. Damn, and I forgot how Iran-Contra is largely responsible for the crack
epidemic or explosion in the 80's in Southern California.

Bush I was knee-deep in it. Once again - Colon's gotta know this.

Radio Host Apologizes for Rice Remark

Mon Nov 22, 9:15 PM ET

By JR ROSS, Associated Press Writer

MADISON, Wis. - A radio host apologized Monday for calling secretary of state nominee Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) "Aunt Jemima," but refused to back down from his criticism that she is a "black trophy" of the Bush administration.

John "Sly" Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM, wrote a letter of apology to local newspapers.

"I'm concerned that I have offended many African-Americans by using a crass term to describe an incompetent, dishonest political appointee of the Bush administration. I apologize," wrote Sylvester, who is white.

Sylvester wrote he would not, however, apologize for criticizing Rice, saying "she has allowed herself to be used as a black trophy by an administration."

11. Powell is more of a tom than Rice. During the election dispute in..
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 08:36 AM by Kahuna
2000, Powell let himself be "dragged out" by bush, to lend him gravitas and media adulation while that nasty Al Gore dared to want votes counted. So, Al Gore would make a statement. The media would then cut to * chillin' at the ranch with Colin at his side. What other reason would there be for Colin to be at his side during the dispute than for him to be a tom?

Then Uncle Colin tommed again during his presentation before the UN to sell a war that he knew was wrong and didn't believe in. Powell can howl now about how he was duped, but I'm not buying it.

As far as Condi goes, she has only proven thus far that she is selfish, calculating and possibly demented. She has never demonstrated that she knows better. So, I would not classify her as a tom.

12. They are Toms. Period.
Whether or not they "bash" the black race to find favor with racist whites is beside the point. They have aided an abetted an administration that is actively hostile to their own people. They sell us out on a daily basis for a few pieces of silver and prestige. Judas is what I would call them.

A Tom is a Tom is a Tom.

13. Just call them
Tommy and Tommette.

I know that Bush would appreciate this, as he likes nicknames anyway!

And don't forget about Justice "Tom", Education "Tom", and Katherine Tom Blackwell. Although Toms are outnumbered by millions in the United States....it's ironic how many can be found in just one place--NOT!
