In yesterday's meeting, Bush said that he had refused to address the NAACP not because he feared a hostile reception from the group but because he thought such a reception would demean the presidency and embarrass the United States before the world, Mfume said. "That was something that was in his gut," Mfume said.

Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary, called the meeting an extension of the president's policy of working with people willing to work with him. "The president and Mr. Mfume have had a good relationship in the past," McClellan said, "and this meeting is an opportunity to talk about how we can work together in the future on shared priorities." 5. Why is the chimperor speaking with the OUTGOING

NAACP president, rather than the new leadership. That alone demonstrates *'s intent to do nothing and have meaningless gestures be misinterpreted as something really swell!

7. All through the first term he refused to speak with grassroots orgs

that wanted to talk about anything NOT on his agenda. Just flat refused. I mean... And, Mfume, what the hell was he thinkin'? He's on the way out anyway, what good could this possibly have served? Bond is the outspoken one, the one staying and the NAACP wants to rev it up a little so there was NO point to a meeting. Then again, maybe it was to halt the IRS investigation. Disappointing either way.
