The Confederate Flag.
I'm sorry, but I don't want to hear this "it's part of the southern heritage" crap anymore. It's racist. Pure and simple. Why anyone would want to glorify one of the most shameful moments in American history is beyond me. It blows my mind that so many "liberals" are sitting there defending it as heritage and something to be proud of. The spin that is placed on this topic is unbelievable. I'm sure you've all heard it. "Well, Lincoln said that he would not touch slavery in the South but only didn't want it to extend to the Western states so the civil war was not about slavery." Bull. The southern states didn't want those new Western states to become free states because then congress would have been tipped against them and slavery would be a thing of the past WITHOUT Lincoln having to "touch it". Any way you slice it that flag represents men fighting for the right to own other men.

1. Those who fly the Confederate battle flag...
...know exactly what they are doing. It's their way of flipping the bird to African Americans and others who find it highly offensive.

Not surprisingly, those who display Confederate flags are almost always the lower classes in their community. They lead miserable lives and this is their way of trying to lash out and hurt others. I tell my wife that whenever I see someone displaying the Confederate battle flag I consider it for what it really is: a sign that says "I'm a total loser, I'm stupid, I have no hope and no future. I'm miserable so, by God, I'm going to make you miserable too."

BTW, who are the liberals who support flying the Conf. battle flag? I haven't met any myself.

My comment to anyone who says they fly the Confederate battle flag because it's their heritage is, "Then why not fly the real Confederate flag? The Confederate government had an official flag, just like all other countries have an official flag. Why choose to fly the battle flag which is the same flag that the KKK uses? Why choose a flag that millions of Americans find highly offensive, unless slapping these people in the face is your real intent." No one has ever responded, they just walk away. They know that I know...

2. Some Democrats must've supported the Confederate flag
if 76% of Georgia voted for it to stay.

3. I'm not sure what vote you're referring to, but...
...27.4% of Georgia's registered voters are black (http://www.sos.state.ga.us/elections/voter_registration/county.htm) which means either a lot of blacks decided not to vote or they voted to support the Confederate flag because I'm sure there were some whites who opposed it.

In any case, I'm sure the vast majority of whites who voted to keep the Confederate flag saw it as an act of defiance, knowing how offensive it is to so many of us.

5. Y ou asked, "who are the liberals
who support flying the Conf. battle flag?' Obviously there had to be some liberals among the voters supporting it. I was answering the liberal question, not referring to black voters voting in support of it.

6. As you can see in that thread I'm not gonna take it anymore!
There's a bunch of racists on that thread. I called one guy on it and my posts were deleted - that's OK. Y'all can tell who they are just by reading their posts. Some of them have been here a long time and that really bothers me. These people think they can manipulate the 1st Amendment to support HATE SPEECH. Bull shit! I won't suffer these fools anymore. :grr:

"Southern Heritage" MY ASS! Fucking KKK Nazis!

7. Yeah, I saw that.
It's just disgusting. I don't know where those who say "I never saw anyone like that waving the confederate flag" were, but it certainly is not the South that I know. My family lives in Texas and I am quite familiar with those who wave that flag, despite being a Northerner.

8. Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hadn't seen that poll before. That's shocking to me. Just the fact that it and the Nazi flag are the two favorite symbols of every racist group in America should give people a clue about the symbolism of the Confederate battle flag.

Of course, I've found that many posters here on DU are not "liberal" in the way I consider myself a liberal.

9. Did you read the whole thread?
It'll give you a snapshot of the racists/ignoramuses we have here at DU, some of whom have been here a long time. Those longtime freeps have lasted because they are very clever to hide their racism and hatred toward liberals in general. They take neutral positions in a clever way to discredit well-meaning folks that may not be as verbose or lack certain rhetorical skills.

The confederate battle flag is a symbol of pure hate that is tied directly to the American Holocaust. I'm never going to let DUers forget this. EVER. Anytime I see a thread about it, I will challenge the so-called "Southern Heritage" supporters. One of those trolls started a thread showing the Klan with U.S. flags, thinking he was so smart. He and his thread was laid to rest very quickly. ;)

10. I did and thanks for pointing it out, I never saw it before.
I'll admit it, I was surprised, though I shouldn't have assumed all participants here are liberal Democrats. I forgot background, geography and TROLLS. There's a little bit of everything here.

11. I read the whole thread...
...with a heavy heart. You GO Swamp Rat. The confederate battle flag is a divisive and hateful symbol.

Just for the record though, DU is a site for Democrats, not liberals. There is one forum in fact whose posts and opinions are no different than those on Free Republic. I've had a lot of my posts deleted by the moderators there. No liberals allowed I guess.

14. Anybody who supports that flag in any way....
is NOT a liberal....period.

I liked what Wes Clark had to say about that flag during the primaries.

"The Confederate flag flies in the face of our most deeply-held American values - diversity, equality and inclusion. I believe that the only flag we should fly is the one that brings us together - the stars and stripes - and that the Confederate flag should never, ever be flown on public buildings."

Democrats should all condemn the Confederate Flag.

12. The rebel flag stands for "Proud to be an Idiot."
You can obfuscate all you want, but it's an inherently racist symbol. It doesn't matter what "you" want it to stand for or what it stood for at one time, you know what it means when you fly it.

It's similar to Al Jolson....Al Jolson wasn't a racist. In fact, he often stood up for black musicians, but if I paint myself in blackface and start singing "Oh mammy!!" you know I'm making fun of black people.

It the same with the judge who dressed in blackface for a party:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1069347

He knew what statement he was making when he did that. The same goes for those who fly a confederate flag.

It pisses me off that he was let off so lightly. I went to the link you provided and found "part of the problem" posting there. :grr:

15. The Confederate Flag is a racist symbol...
...which is propped up by overt racist, or those who are in denial regarding issues they have about equality, or are simply ignorant, which is a combination of both. The "its my heritage" issue is a morally bankrupt point. If one says that, then are they saying that they are proud of their forefathers racist heritage? Would that be any different than a German saying that they flew the swastika because their forefathers flew it, and they are proud of their forefathers because that was their "heritage"? Though people may not always be responsible for the "Sins of their Fathers", they should have the good judgment not to condone errors those fathers made. Slavery, in any moral and ethical sense, was and is wrong. It is indefensible. During the Civil War, there were a group of people, in this country, who died and killed in support of human bondage, while holding up that flag. Their descendants need to come to terms with the fact, that they were morally and ethically wrong, and that the Confederate flag, is a visible symbol of that bankrupt philosophy.

16. It's a racist symbol of defiance. The south has never gotten over..
the whomping (yes - I mean "whomping") they received. It's their way of saying, 'never forget.'

17. It disgusts me..
and I'm not an African-American. It should be done away with.

The psycho neo-nazis at least admit that they embrace the swastika for what it stood for. They are equally disgusting, but are not trying to be wolves in sheeps' clothing.

The most upsetting thing to me is that white southerners with half a brain who are enamored of the confederate flag understand EXACTLY what it represents to their black neighbors, but could not care less about that. That's the most disturbing thing of all. No amount of 'revisionist history' about Abraham Lincoln's motives can explain that type of mentality in the 21st Century.

Just another DU iconsistency, I guess, in re that other thread about the confederate flag. It's not surprising, given that there are DU'ers who will defend the right of Iran to stone a woman to death for adultery, under the guise of cultural sensitivity.
