Blackwell Seeks Boost from BET's Jeff
By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Reporter
Posted Aug. 15, 2006 – Affectionately known to the BET audience as “Cousin Jeff,” Jeff Johnson, the youth pastor, activist and talk show host, is adding campaign spokesman to his resume.
Gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell, the Republican nominee for Ohio’s governor’s, has tapped Johnson to woo young and urban voters. No doubt, Johnson connects well with that audience.
Johnson has a history of political activism and, in a statement released by the Blackwell camp, said, “Ken Blackwell represents the best that Ohio has to offer in this year’s gubernatorial race.”
With eight out of 10 African-American voters still supporting Democratic candidates, Johnson has indicated that he wants Black youths to look outside the Democratic Party. “I will carry the message that it is time to challenge the antiquated political alliance that has failed to include young and urban voters in its policy agenda, Johnson said. Blackwell is running against six-term Rep. Ted Strickland, (D-Ohio).
