D12 rapper Proof was shot to death this morning (April 11) at a Detroit club that was operating illegally after hours, according to the Detroit Free Press. The artist, whose real name was DeShaun Holton, was 30. Another unidentified man was also shot and is in critical condition at Detroit's St. John Hospital.

Proof rose to prominence alongside Eminem and other D12 members over the past five years, and even served as the best man at Eminem's January wedding, the Free Press reports. He also appeared in Eminem's autobiographical film "8 Mile."

"Memorial service arrangements are still being made, and his friends and family would appreciate privacy during this difficult time," reads a statement from Interscope Records, with which Eminem's Shady imprint is affiliated.

Proof's solo debut, "Searching for Jerry Garcia," was released in August 2005 on his own Iron Fist label. "I went back to the original flavor of hip hop that I remember, that I love," he told Billboard.com at the time. " people used samples, that kind of feel. Everything on there isn't a sample, but just the rawness I remember from '94, '95."


The artist is the second member of Eminem's inner circle to be shot in recent months. Rapper Obie Trice was shot while driving in Detroit on New Year's Eve but has since recovered from his wounds.

2. Thanks Lisa. About three weeks ago I woke up around 3AM and

watched D12 and Eminem in a taped concert. I thought to myself what an asset Proof was to Eminem. Then I heard after 82 days Eminem and his wife, Kim, were getting a divorce. Now this.

RIP Proof.

3. It is very sad indeed

I heard earlier that Bizarre had been shot as well, but that ended up being untrue. I was extremely upset by that news, as I had followed him on Celebrity Fit Club and was really proud of his success (still another unnamed victim is in critical condition).

All this violence. It doesn't make sense. :(

5. The news said this morning that the unnamed victim

is a bouncer. They also mentioned that Proof leaves behind a wife and five children. He and Eminem were close enough that I trust Eminem will make sure they are well taken care of unlike the families of some rappers have been after they've died.
