RE: Redux Furor bout Vick
I'm glad that Vick faced justice, and was punished for his crimes.
and from what I have seen, he paid the price
that this society as a whole chose for him.

In fact, I do wish that the attitude prevalent here and other places
would have been the attitude of the last generation....
to not just seek out justice in a general way, but also specifically against
those who were not only cruel to animals but also those who used animals to cause
real harm to innocent people as well as to other animals.

Although many won't admit that there is still somewhat of a cultural divide
based on historical events in reference to the question on whether the life
of an animal is worth as much as that of a person, what Vick did was horrendously cruel......
and although he paid something for it, I gather there will always be those who will never
think he paid enough, and would prefer to see him burn in hell.

So I am glad to see that most folks aren't interested in holding grudges,
and not only believe in redemption, but support it with actions and words!

If we all decided to never forgive unreasonable odious and barbaric behavior,
I don't believe that this country would have survived to this day!

1. Wow...

What an excellent post Frenchie. I've poked my head in here maybe twice this week, and each time I thought the threads and comments about Mike Vick were just disgusting. Thanks for putting together such a powerful post.

Also wanted to add text I lifted from a friend's FB Page that hits the nail on the head:

‎1) Michael Vick committed a horrible crime.

2) Michael Vick went to prison for that crime. I would be very interested to see how his sentence compared with others who were convicted of similar offenses. Can you tell me if he did more or... less time than others?

3) Michael Vick was released and the NFL gave him a conditional opportunity to resume his career. The Philadelphia Eagles took a chance on him (it was a risk that many employers are afraid to take).

4) Michael Vick has shown contrition and continues to acknowledge his horrible crimes by volunteering for the Human Society.

5) There will be people who could care less about Vick, hope he burns in hell, fails and goes back to prison.

6) There are others of us who understand what recidivism is, understands its impact on lower income/minority communities and applaud organizations who give ex offenders a chance to contribute to society. Additionally, we pull for those ex offenders to succeed because their ability to succeed and not re-offend improves the quality of life for everyone.

7) Michael Vick's crimes are inexcusable, but he was not given a life sentence and whether its him or some nameless ex offender I believe in redemption.

8) I appreciate those who want nothing but the worse for him, but I just ask that they understand and appreciate those of us who are pulling for him.

3. I wrote saying that I agreed with your OP and I was sickened by the vitriol
aimed at Michael Vick even though I don't care two figs about the man personally or professionally.

But apparently, something I said was "bad" or "wrong" because my post was deleted. I had a post deleted in GD-P the other day and even the person I responded to said there was nothing nasty about it. Makes you wonder...

4. When is it going to stop?
You make a good point, pics included. Vick, unlike too many celebrities, actually served time for the crimes for which he was convicted--and it's still not enough for some. In certain categories, the lame left is no better than the rabid right.

5. I liked your penultimate line ...
"So I am glad to see that most folks aren't interested in holding grudges,

We are such a forgiving people ... aren't we?

6. Dog fighting is a whole subculture
like cock fighting and other blood sports such as bullfighting ...

but the focus has only been on Vick and never on others who fight dogs. Where is the reportage on that?

7. Let's see ...
Young Black Man ... in the public eye ... making millions ... screws up ... does his time ... returns to making millions. I think many parts of America (including here at DU) have a problem with young Black Men making millions.

9. You got it.
They're happy for him to re-enter the work force by "flipping burgers" or "driving a cab." But back to the NFL and making millions?? Hellllll no.
