DU Musician's Group Shameless Plug Thread!
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 10:09 AM by Beware the Beast Man
OK, a good number of us signed in, so if anybody would like to plug their wares, this is the place to do it. So if you have a website or an account on an mp3 host, music store, etc., plug away!

Here's my stuff. It's mostly electronic/ambient music, and it's not very professional:

http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?AID=15077
http://www.audiostreet.net/artists/007/839/beware_the_beast_man.html

Mind you, I won't be able to listen to anything until after I get off of work, but I'm interested in hearing what you have to offer!

edit- I'm aware some of you have already posted links to your music already, but hell, do it again.

1. Until recently, I was in this band........
http://vendooza.net/

There are 3 mp3's on the site that I play on.

It's a fun band, and I enjoyed it but when weighed against some other issues I have, I had to put it aside for now.

8. Thanks.
There were very few overdubs done in any of those. A little background vocal, perhaps the lead guitar. What you hear is pretty much what the band sounded like live, or rather sounds like live. I guess they're playing their first gig with my replacement in about a week.

My tastes ran a little counter to how these songs turned out. At least in a Studio environment. I didn't mind bashing out some garage punk live, it's fun.........

But I'd have rather sweetened (as in Matthew Sweet) these songs up a bit.

10. Some attic music:
Due to work, kids, etc, I've been home recording a lot in the last few years. I've been a four-tracker since the 80s, but this is what I do almost exclusively now. Please have a listen; I'll try to check out some of the sites listed here.

Recorded recently on a yahama aw16g digital 16 track:

Recorded on a Fostex 4-track cassette recorder, 1990s:

25. Boy Do I Like This Stuff!
Really solid, and superbly recorded. Good gear change to the chorus and i really like the singer, both voice and style. Guitar tones are superb, as well, both rhythm and lead. The separation, stereo and eq, are very well done. Who ever did it knows what they're doing.

The second song sounds very much early Pretenders. (Tatooed Love Boys came to mind.) I didn't have time to listen past the 2nd song, but i liked what i heard a lot.

"Who ever did it knows what they're doing"
That would be me...the project started out with 2 girls with some good songs. I brought a drummer friend in and he and I worked out the grooves for the songs (I played bass) we recorded the songs in my 24 tr. studio after 3 rehearsals... the singer was a handfull to record, she was very raw and immune to coaching! big compression on her vox tracks. Took about a week to mix the 6 songs.

33. Thanks for the kind words, but I'm a fucking idiot!
For putting up mp3's without listening to them...DOH! the songs had encoding errors and sounded like shit...I am new to this new fangled mp3 thingy, thought the process would be as reliable as using my regular studio stuff. So, newly posted...all 6 songs done right this time, straight from the master.

Would appreciate any feedback on how these songs translate on computer monitoring setups.

Thx, HD

34. I Heard No Encoding Errors
Maybe it depended upon what one uses to play it back. I just used Windows Media Player and the sound was as superb as an MP3 can be. I didn't hear any encoding errors, so maybe your second try is an improvement, but i didn't hear anything wrong with the originals.

35. I'm stumped
Thanks for your reply,

I noticed the errors using WMP. I then looked at the files in wavelab and could see the errors and they repeated exactly every time.
I had ripped the original files from a mix CD and then encoded them in wavelab...The 2nd attempt was a direct transfer from the master hard drive and when encoded showed none of the errors that the originals had.
Of the two songs I originally posted, the 2nd song had the errors towards the end...did you listen all the way through?

23. Well, OK!
I listened to both. It's very different than what i do, but i know what i hate, and i don't hate this!

The first song is nice little rockabilly thing. It percolates along nicely and is very steady. If one likes that sort of thing, there would be nothing not to like about this.

The second song (Simple Apology) i like better as a song (not a big rockabilly guy). Nice melody and pleasant lyrics!

The chorus or B part of the verses (i'm not sure how you guys think of it) is a little loose for my taste. The changes aren't locked down tight, and clash with the phrasing of the lead vocal a bit. For this type of song, (it's not punk or thrash), playing as one big unit is critical. (Listen to your Gin Blossoms albums and you'll see what i mean.)

The bridge on that song, though, is real catchy. It's a nice change in mood and feel for the song and resolves into the solo nicely. The vocal on the bridge is real emotive and well sung.

The harmonies are just a pinch too loud for me, since there are times when it's louder than the lead vocal. But, you might have done that on purpose, so that just a matter of taste, not right or wrong.

The recording quality is also quite good. There is plenty of separation between the parts and it's easy to hear everything, although i personally would have brought the drums up and made them bigger. (I'm a Big Bam Boom type of guy.)

All in all, if that was my band, i would be happy with it, especially since they are self-penned and their pretty darned good tunes.

24. Thank for the honesty.
The rockabilly tune was done in a studio and the second song was done on an old 4-track and it was hard to get a decent mix on it. All the vocals were me on the second tune and just lead vocal on the first. It's funny, the rockabilly tune was really a throw away, one of those things that come out of your head for no good reason and we were not a rockabilly band but it was fun. I didn't know what I was going to do for a harmonica part until it came in the first take and the producer said "I guess that's a keeper". Lol I think we only played it live once.

Thanks again.

26. No Problem
Hopefully, when we get done with our two projects you will be equally honest in your appraisal.

The first project is converting the audio from the television show they did about us back in 1990 to MP3. Our sound guy, who now lives in Atlanta, is working on that.

The second one is a basement 16 track project that is in progress right now. It will be a mix of covers and originals, but part of our ethos is to do major rethinks of classic tunes. (Or maybe classic in our mind.) Sort of like the jazz guys have done since forever, by bebopping or swinging tunes written for a completely different thing. (Coltrane on My Favorite Things, for instance.)

Anyway, hopefully we'll post links here soon. Keep up the good work.
