Ever Collaborated Long Distance?

A good friend and I have been talking about starting a band together for 15 years but have not been in the same city or state much or have been busy with other projects.

Last night he called and said he wanted to write songs together, so I said lets do it. So now what?

Anyone ever collaborate long distance? Tapes? CD's? Email MP3's? Better way?

We are both guitarists, by the way.

1. FL Studio includes "Collab"

the closes thing to realtime online collaboration that I'm aware of.
Other than that, i'd go for the email route. What do you guys record with now? Do you have software in common?

2. My friend and I trade ideas over the phone, communicate through email

and he sends me audio. He has recording capability, I do not.

A lot of our collaboration comes from playing over a phone for the other one, and taking a lot of notes.

Usually it works pretty well.

The only thing is we have to make use of the rare and infrequent moments when we are together to practice and work out our stuff.
