help!.....is my new mixer broken or am i dumb?
so i just received this PA package via UPS: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/fg=141/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/630177/

it has a Yamaha EMX5000-20 20-Channel Powered Mixer.
i can't get it to register any input from mics or a guitar.
when i cut it on i don't hear the slight hiss i would expect to hear from the speakers.

as best i can tell i am not getting a input signal, the input signal light for the particular channel doesn't flicker at all, even with the gain and the volume fader for the channel up all the way.

i hope i am missing something.

the mixer does have a slight ding/dent in it, i am hoping it is not broken.

any thoughts on the matter would be extremely helpful.

thanks!

1. dumb questions but...
Did you try all the channels?

Did you check if the cables are bad?

Do you have a "trim" knob (is that what it's called?) the one that adjusts the level IN? if so, is it up?

2. thanks for your reply
i haven't tried all the channels but i have tried about 5 now.

i am fairly positive it is not bad cables. i have tried my guitar through a processor into it and a brand new mic with brand new mic cables, neither register at all.

as for the trim knob, yes it is up, it is called input "gain" on this mixer. the knob is right below each input for each channel.

i feel like i am missing something totally obvious or this thing is not working right.

thanks for the reply!

3. It probably is just something you are overlooking- you'll get it to work
don't fret too much yet.

There isn't a standby switch is there?

4. there is a standby switch
but it isn't on, it should be blinking if it is standing by.
when i push it, it blinks as if it works.
so i don't think it is in standby.

6. If we were all in the room with you we'd all be pushing each other...
...out of the way saying "let me try."

It's a shame that its busted. I hope someone insured it.

That shaking noise isn't the reverb, is it?
(Sorry - couldn't help myself.)

7. hehe, yeah
it's not the reverb, the effects on it are digital.
plus these are big clunky peices moving around not a spring banging against something :)

9. thanks for the reply
and yes i did push that button.

i have packed the mixer up and will be sending it back at lunch. i called and got an RA number last night.

the thing is definetely broken. if you move/shake it you can definetely hear little bits of broken plastic and big bits of things clunking around in there.

thanks for your help though!
i really appreciate it!

10. never a good sign.
Sorry for the bonehead question.
Nothing quite like dropping a few grand on equipment and having it arrive broken...
