Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,

And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees;

Send me off forever but I ask you please,

Don't fence me in.

Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle

3. Maybe it's a restraint, something you'd put on a convict or a horse.

5. Hobbles
Funny, I just happened in here after reading a post my son asked me to look at in a different thread.

Hobbles are a restraint for horses. Most often rawhide, they look like handcuffs. You put them on your horses front legs just above the hooves. The horse can still walk though slowly and not far. Cowboys used them when they rested on the prairie where there was no place to tie their horses. That way they could always find them. Good western horses are always hobble broke.
