Find out how you can connect your grocery shopping to a worthwhile cause!
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 04:08 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
worthwhile charity in your area!

I just re-discovered the Dallas Peace Center (http://www.dallaspeacecenter.org) and I found out I can go to my local grocery store, tell them the Dallas Peace Center's code and when I use my store card thingie when they ring me up, 1% of my purchases to go the DPC.

I set it up yesterday and am quite excited about it. See if similar organizations in your area do the same thing. You have to buy groceries, and if you don't have a co-op near (I don't, not even close) then you might as well make sure that money helps out a worthy progressive cause!!!

1. Hey sweetie--
remind me of the code again! I was going to do this a couple months ago, then I lost my newsletter that had the code in it!

Gracias,
FSC :-)

2. 570--
and you can only do that at Tom Thumb or Simon David stores. If you want to do it at Krogers, the Dallas Peace Center has a form you can mail in to get them hooked up to your Kroger card.

3. No shopping at Krogers. Bleagh!
Tom Thumb is at least Safeway, that sort of gives to Dems. Out here we don't have too many options besides Wal-Mart, Brookshires and Albertsons (all Repug).

Thanks!
FSC :-)

4. Tom Thumb actually gives more to repugs than
Albertson's does.

I've got both near me but I am going to make sure all my purchases at Tom Thumb at least go (1%) to the Dallas Peace Center. That sort of offsets their repuke contributions, to me.

5. I've heard mixed reports.
According to this link

They give more to Dems. And with the Peace Center contributions, this is the one I'm choosing to trust. I don't have many more choices where I am.

6. Anyone know anything about H-E-B Grocery?

Parent company of Central Market?

I checked out OpenSecrets.org but couldn't find anything.

7. I checked them out too
and couldn't find anything. I also checked choosetheblue for them and could find nothing.

Maybe they don't MAKE political contributions. Some companies don't. But if they are part of that National Association of Grocers or whatever it's called, that organization gives mostly to repukes.

8. Ok, I dug a little deeper.

They're a privately held company. Their CEO is Charles Butts. He seems to be the main guy at their company that makes political contributions -- there was one other guy that threw a chunk of change to Kerry.

Here's everything I found on opensecrets.org for Mr. Butts, for this cycle.

Rethugs:
Kay Bailey 2,000
Henry Bonilla 1,000
John Cornyn 1,000 (and a 1,000 credit? this was weird)
Michael McCaul 1,000
Lamar Smith 2,000
Total R:6,000

Dems:
Martin Frost 1,000
Chet Edwards 1,000
Charles Stelholm 1,000
Solomon P. Ortiz 2,000
Ciro Rodriguez 1,000
Total D:6,000

So, I'm inclined to give them a pass, because it seems to me this guy is being pretty scrupulous about giving to both Rs and Ds. AND, he gave to some of my favorite Ds, and did NOT give to some of my most-hated Rethugs, i.e. Tom DeLay.

Yay! I don't have to give up Central Market!!!!!!!
