Salvation Army is a RW Evangelical Church
Per Americablog(scroll 3/4 down), they are very anti-gay. Americablog suggests giving to Big Brothers instead. Also, the Salvation Army has been refused a permit by Target this year.
The article also has a link that has a download of a voucher to put into the SA's bucket(instead of money).

Details of the Salvation Army's rabidly anti-gay politics
by John in DC - 11/15/2004 06:07:51 PM

Do NOT give a dime to the Salvation Army this holiday season - instead, give to another pro-gay charity, like Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

SALVATION ARMY IS A FAR-RIGHT EVANGELICAL CHURCH

The Salvation Army is anti-gay and actively lobbies against pro-gay legislation in the US and abroad (I provide lots of evidence for this below). The money you put in that red can is going to anti-gay evangelical Christian lobbyists. They believe that since they're a "church" they have the right to not hire gay people because we're sinners. Great, well this sinner gives his money to real charities this holiday seasons, and not to anti-gay evangelical churches who lobby the White House and foreign governments to take our rights away (see articles below).

3. Yeah, I know. That's why I avoid their thrift shop.
Goodwill is still ok, as far as I know, and if you live in the metro LA area, "Out of the Closet" thrift stores are also good choice (proceeds go to support AIDS Healthcare Foundation).

5. Me too. There are plenty of other good thrift stores
the Humane Society has a few in my area, and so do a few hospitals.

There's so many worthy-and needy-charities out there that dropping the Salvation Army shouldn't cause anyone any angst.

6. No argument, but a weird anecdote/we can't trust"Christian" charities! any
I lived in an apartment building in FL, and every day had a passing pleasantry with an old woman who lived there (we both had dogs).

When I had to move away (sick mom), she invited me in for a farewell drinkie. We started at 6 -- ended at 4 AM. Absolutely amazing conversation, a woman with an incredible life, a profound life -- a real "My Dinner with Andre" kinda thing.

t was one of those crazy amazing experiences in life that you MIGHT be lucky to have -- to have a wise woman passing her wisdom on to you.

I was amazed to find out she had been, for some years, in a career position with the Salvation Army. I would have assumed they were fuddy duddies -- but this lady was fascinating. We talked about EVERYTHING -- We somehow got around to talking about sexuality, and she said that her parents (SA) were totally open about it, and just explained the whole shebang as the most natural thing in the world, never made it mysterious, or sinful, or anything, but just wanted her to be "conscious" of its complexities before she became active. To her parents, I say BRAVO! I maybe should add that she and her family were Canadian, and as it is increasingly obvious, the folks up north are far less pathological than our "rebels" down south. She had mentored troubled young girls, and only spoke frankly about sexuality to them -- and by golly, they came to *understand* sex within the total context of life -- and turned their lives around. No shame, so damnation -- just facts. And honeys, I SWEAR she had told me she had been a career Salvation Army (in Canada, albeit).

As to those here who shudder to see such folk outside WalMart, etc, Xmas 2004 -- I know how you feel. I have been genuinely open to them before, but all this weird Christian charity with political shit has totally turned me off. ISN'T IT AWFUL??? I am MAD about this!! It's like the problems Muslims have had with fulfilling their religious duties by making charitable donations -- YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE IT WILL END UP!!! I will NOT fund wacko politics in the US -- so I no longer TRUST Christian charities. Anymore -- I figure its a fucking scam, like the Moonies or the Hare Khrishnas (as they operated in past; many are decent devout folk).

OOOOOoooooo I am MAD! I want to say, "Faith-based charity, EH? Then go straight to George W, and leave ME alone...."
