Post 'em if you've got 'em: Classic Movie Clips.

It's just a hunch, but I would say we could all use some cheering up.

Well, remember how one of Woody Allen's characters decides life is worth living after he sees a Marx Brothers film? I'm calling out for your favorite film clips.

First, a bit of shameless fun. Someone on YouTube managed to combine Katharine Hepburn and Shania Twain. Stop that sputtering and bear with me; it actually works. Feast your eyes:

2. TCM Sydney last night paid tribute to Deborah Kerr,
marking her birthday today, September 30th.

They screened four of her films, the first being "Vacation From
Marriage", a light but fun film which paired her with Robert Donat. A
dreary, stick-in-the-mud English couple are separated by war - he goes
into the Navy, and she becomes a WREN. After three years apart, both
are convinced that they have grown away from their spouse, and decide
independently that they will have to divorce. I've seen it a few times,
and always enjoy the film and their performances (and also the support
of Glynis Johns).

Here's a clip from the opening sequences:

and some of the people they meet while they're away from each other:

I won't put up the final clip in case I spoil it for anyone who hasn't
seen it.

Incidentally, we get the American version here, but the British version,
called "Perfect Strangers" is longer - I'd love to see what we're
missing.

3. Kerr and Donat and Johns, oh, my!
Most promising. Now I'm going to have watch the whole thing, pieced together on YouTube (Netflix apparently doesn't have it).

Thanks for the preview! :hi:

4. And the ever-popular...
...barn dance sequence from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The video quality doesn't do it justice, but it is widescreen.

I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite moment or move: When the Pontipee brothers leapfrog over the town suitors to dance away with the ladies? Milly's pas de deux with Frank? The brothers' gymnastics routines, complete with ax?

5. For debate night, a little pajama-clad fun...

...with Ronald Colman and Jean Arthur in The Talk of the Town. Oh, Mr. Hays, stop breathing into that paper bag. It's all perfectly innocent.

Anyway, any classic film-loving DUer who doesn't know The Talk of the Town, it's one to put on your must-see list. It's got everything: politics, civil liberties, a Supreme Court nominee with principles, and lots of laughs. Oh, and the love triangle's great fun, too.

6. Love that film!
And it was quite sophisticated for the Hayes era - apart from the triangle, there was a dark side
to Grant's character that might have disturbed Mr Hayes if he'd recognised it.

8. Great film!
That's one of the unsung -- pardon that pun -- heroes of the Christmas season.

9. Not strictly a class film -
but here's a favourite clip from what is becoming a Christmas classic
in our house:

I've admired Andrew Lincoln since "This Life" - thought his Egg was one
of the most appealing characters in a series laden with future stars -
and in this he had a wonderful vulnerable quality that made me ache for
him.

10. As usual, the "TCM Remembers" short is extraordinary.
At the end of every year, Turner Classic Movies runs a short film honoring members of the film community -- actors, directors, screenwriters, critics, et al -- who have died that year. It's inevitably very beautifully edited and quite moving, and this year's is no exception.

They've certainly remember more people than I included in the obits thread.

11. They really did an excellent job!
I saw it on TCM this morning after Bundle of Joy. I like how they included contemporary actors, such as Heath Ledger in a scene from Brokeback Mountain. I didn't remember them doing that in the past. :hi:

12. They're actually better than the Academy.
The "In Memoriam" segment of the Academy Awards ceremony invariably leaves somebody's nose out of joint. Either it's made too late to include very recently deceased figures, or they omit someone for unfathomable reasons (I think they face time constraints, too).

I've noticed that the TCM tributes include a wide variety of figures -- stunt artists, independent film actors, etc. For example, the 2006 includes a beautiful clip of the late Adrienne Shelly, who was an actress, screenwriter, and director -- not a household name, and not known for blockbuster films, but memorable (and gone much too soon).

Classic Arts Showcase happened to run this short film this morning -- appropriate in the runup to the Academy Awards tonight. Feast your eyes:
