TCM Schedule for Tuesday, August 5th: CLAUDE RAINS

What a voice, what a man, what a character. A little guy with lifts in his shoes and only one good eye, he was by far the most intriguing figure depicted in Aljean Harmetz's The Making of Casablanca (AKA Round Up the Usual Suspects).

A bit of his biography, courtesy of the usual suspects, IMDB and TCM:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001647/bio

And I don't print this image to depress everybody, just to provide perspective on what made the man tick.

I'm glad they're showing two of his nice-guy performances, the nurturing therapist from , Now, Voyager and the aptly named Job from Mr. Skeffington, both opposite Bette Davis, but I would have liked to have seen more of his pairings with John Garfield (Daughters Courageous, Saturday's Children).

They Won't Forget is still a shocker, and those who are well versed in American history will recognize it as a fictionalized version of the Leo Frank case.

1. Little Man - Big Talent
A couple of years ago I searched in vain for a good biography of Claude Rains, and was surprised and
disappointed to find that no good writer had ever attempted one. Apparently he started dictating
an autobiography to his daughter Jessica, but died before he'd got very far with it. I'd really
like to know more about this extremely talented actor, and I hope that somebody will be inspired to
write a good account of his life and work.

I notice "The Unsuspected" on the list - I've only seen it once, but it was very good viewing, and
I can't imagine why TCM here hasn't shown it more often. "Deception" isn't on the list - I think
that's one of his great performances, and IMO he managed to steal the picture from Bette Davis, no
mean feat. The dinner scene in that film (I won't spoil it for anyone who has yet to see it) was
both wickedly nasty and extremely funny at the same time.

Sad that he wasn't even awarded an honorary Oscar for his work; he certainly deserved to be
recognised.
