I have to share something an "unschooling mom" from one of my hs loops wrote about her 5 yo. (I'll be paraphrasing bit from memory.) :

On a recent trip to the dentist, the hygienist commented to the little boy: "Are you happy to missing school today?"

Boy: "I don't go to school."

Some dialogue ensued whereby they determined that - yes, he was "homeschooled" (with the appropriate eye-rolling on the part of the hygienist), then the hygienist asked, "So what does your Mommy teach you?"

Boy: "She doesn't teach me ANYTHING!"

Hygienist (looking a bit smug, supercilious, and superior): "Oh, that's too bad. If you went to school you could learn a lot of things! Mommies don't always know everything there is to teach."

Boy (looking puzzled): "Oh she knows everything, but I'm too busy learning for her to teach me anything!"

2. Great story. Before I pulled my now 16 year old son out of school

we had a nightly joke: I would say, Son, stop learning now, it is time to do your homework! Ha--so true, so true.
