3. Best of all time?
Link from The Legend Of Zelda series. Followed closely by Samus from Metroid and Mario from Super Mario Bros. After that, it's a free fall.

17. all of the characters in that game were great.
i loved how each one was developed. over all, it barely edged out Earthbound as my favorite RPG of all time, and thus, favorite video game of all time.

29. I think Seph was actually a rather sympathetic villain
While he didn't exhibit signs of remorse or anything like Vader did, I still found him a sympathetic villain. I think it's because when you look at the circumstances of his life, there really was no other way he could have turned out. He was bred as a biological weapon, never had love or nurturing from anyone (with the exception perhaps of Professor Gast, but he was murdered). He probably felt alienated from others since the day he was born. No wonder he snapped and lost it. I felt more sorry for him than anything else, and even though I am a big Aerith fan I couldn't even hate him after he killed her. Sephiroth just seemed really sad to me. I wanted to save him from himself more than I wanted to kill him.

I also remain convinced that Jenova drives people mad. If you look at everyone who got her cells either ended up crazy or came to a horrible end: Sephiroth, the clones, Hojo, Lucretia, even Cloud (he alone didn't come to a bad end, but those disassociative episodes he had were the doing of those cells, I think). An idea I toy around with in fanfic is that Hojo used Jenova cells in his experiments on Vincent and that's why he was plagued by those nightmares. Maybe we will find out what really happened either in Advent Children or Dirge of Cerberus.

11. I've gotta say Link and Mario
Not so much for their personalities back in the day (what character really did have personality then?), but for the adventures they were featured in.

I grew up on the Super Mario Bros. and Zelda games for the original NES and Super Nintendo and have a lot of fond memories of competing against my friends to see who could make it through first. We probably had the most fun with Super Mario 3, because it had so many different types of levels and so many secrets. Each of us claimed to be a master of one of the worlds -- mine was World 5 since I could clear it faster than anyone else. But Zelda on the Super Nintendo was fun in much the same way. One of my friends bought it and beat it before I even laid a hand upon it, and then he'd offer purposely vague clues and advice to another friend and myself after we started playing. Even when we weren't competing, it was just fun to play through those games and try and find all of the secrets or better techniques for doing things that maybe we had missed before.

The original Metroid was fun, too. That game was absolutely HUGE for its day. I still remember my shock (and later my friends' shock) when I found out that Samus was a woman. That revelation would hardly be a big deal now, but two decades ago, it was pretty major.

There are many, many characters I like more than Mario. Let's face it though, he paved the way for every single last one of them.

And he's still he most recognizable character in all of gaming.

MGS FOREVER (the original PS version, NOT MGS 2) Although I should add that MGS 3 is quite good as well. Maybe Hideo Kojima will redeem himself for MGS 2 after all.

37. Oh, I like Snake.
I think I must be the only person on Earth that actually liked MGS2, but I didn't like it so much for the game but for the supreme slashiness of it. It's one of those situations where I think the fanfics & doujinshis are better than the source material, because they take the characters places my brain wanted them to go but couldn't in the game itself.

Of course, I also played the original MGS only once years and years ago and barely remember it at all, except that I liked it, so I wasn't coming into MGS2 with any prior baggage or preconceptions. That might have something to do with it, I think. :P

MGS3 looks supremely boring to me. Yay, another sneak-sneak-sneak game set in Vietnam. Because, you know, there's just not enough of those right now. Unless there's some hidden scene where Snake does a striptease or something, I think I'll be skipping this one.

I'm sick to death of everyone treating Kojima and all things MGS like it's the second coming, though. Then again, if you look in the Final Fantasy thread you'll see I don't have a single leg to stand on, so I think I will just shut up about now. :P

It may seem shallow and trite on the surface but the gameplay and storyline is AMAZING. (One word will sum it up for you: EVA!). But I won't spoil it for you, go get it and play it. You won't regret it.
