Sony has unveiled its new PlayStation 3 console, calling it "a supercomputer for computer entertainment".

The consoles are opening a new chapter in the history of video games, offering high-definition cinematic images in real time and the computing power to deliver sophisticated and complex gameplay.

The battle for supremacy in the games console arena is more than just about shooting aliens.

These machines are a key part of a campaign to dominate how people watch films or listen to music at home.

Wow, I feel like I'm gonna have to ditch my 34" CRT Sony Vega hi-def set since CRTs can only go to around 520 progressive lines. Per games-pot ;) the xbox 360 natively renders games in 720p?! So now I'll have to save up for a micro-display projection TV with LCD or DLP technology. My dad just got a 50" Sony LCOS "SXRT" which is supposedly capable of 1080P. It's friggin awesome. But as far as the consoles go, I'll wait for Sony and Nintendo to launch their machines and see how the chips fall before I drop 5-6 bills on a console, and and thousands more on a TV that can go to 1080P.

Question for Xbox 360 owners: does the machine and the 1st gen games natively go to 720P?
