I first started playing on a rent-to-own computer from Rent-A-Center. $50 A WEEK for a Celeron 500 with 64MB of memory and an onboard graphics chip. Even with the old interface where the action was in a tiny window and buttons and stats took up 60% of the screen, my lag was so bad that when I tried to take the lifts up into the treetops in Kelethin as a newb, I would die from falling THROUGH the lift before it got to the top, more than half the time.
I started looking around on Ebay, and ended up buying a PCI graphics card and 256 MB of memory for about $150 because there was still no way I could afford a decent system of my own. That did the trick and carried me through until I started building my own computers, although several times I was out of the game for weeks or even months due to hardware failures.
I have a 67 bard on Bristlebane and my wife has a 50-something beastlord. We have our accounts open still, but we are now much more happy with EQ2. I have a 47 ranger/39 woodworker on the Lavastorm server with a name that pokes massive fun at *, but luckily nobody's complained and had the GM's change it. My wife has a 39 conjurer/50 provisioner (makes food and drinks). The first full expansion is coming out in September!
You (in the generic sense for whoever reads this thread) had any thoughts of switching to EQ2? It's everything that EQ is but much more balanced in terms of solo or group play, and more information is streamlined so that you can always remember what quests you have and stuff. I highly recommend it.
Edited for clarity, or something. :P
