So...the Sony PSP
Who's getting one? My iPod just bit the dust, so I'm thinking about it. Thoughts?

2. get another ipod
You can get a 4GB iPod mini for $200.

The PSP is $250, PLUS you'll need a memory stick to store the mp3s on, which are about $100 for a 512MB.

I'm not bashing the PSP, but if you're looking at it to replace your iPod, there are cheaper alternatives. I'm not into handheld gaming really, but personally, I would get an iPod mini and a Nintendo DS.

But I'm a cheap sumbitch, so what do I know :)

3. The PSP is a POS.
No way I'd waste the money on it.

4. fix your ipod. cheaper and more useful.
either use apple care program you got for your ipod, or crack it open after a diagnostic and replace the broken parts. eiter way should be cheaper than the upfront cost for the psp.

i use my ipod for oodles of things besides holding 300 lbs worth of music. i'm sure you can too.

5. I'd like to know the specs of the AC adapter
Whatever or not it would work in Europe - quite obviously a major point to me.

Also: what are the specs of the redesigned PS2's AC adapter?

7. You'll probably need a converter regardless
But a huge plus from what I hear is that, like the GBA and DS, there's no region blocks on the PSP. IOW, you can play Japanese games on an American PSP and vice-versa without a mod chip. I'm not sure if this also applies to the UMD movies, but it would be freaking awesome.

In my experience peripherals & accessories tend to be plug-and-play across regions even if the games themselves aren't. My BF is an Aussie and all his PS1/2 memory cards, steering wheel, etc. work just fine on my US PS2. Ditto with my Aussie GBA (which he bought me) and its US AC adapter. My guess is that unless you wait for the PSP's release in Europe and someone releases an AC adapter for it you could probably just get by with one of those power converter jammies you can pop on the end of a US plug. Any big computer/electronics store has them and they're pretty cheap.

8. Thanks
A relative will come to Europe next week. Considering that it'll take months for the PSP to get to Europe, it would be kinda cool to have her bring me one. (although a US PS2 would be neat as well; we hardly get any RPGs)
Especially considering that the Euro makes it a bargain.

I have hopes - I remember reading somewhere that the new PS2 power supply works on both sides of the pond (with just a mechanic adapter), it might be true for the PSP as well.
I'd just like to know for sure.

But yeah, simply buying a 8.5V AC/DC adapter shouldn't be too hard.

9. Update:
The reports about bad pixels did it for me. I've asked for an American PS2 (which actually costs about as much as Mod-Chip and works fine in Europe with a mechanic adapter) and a big stack of RPGs. I won't have to fear a lack of games: I can order from Canada with free shipping.

15. and American games on Eurpoean ones.
The Nintendo handhelds are AFAIK not region coded; nor are - for that matter - PSP games. UMD movies are region-coded, though.

6. Took the advice of the iPod folks
The $250 plus $100+ for a memory card is what convinced me. That and the fact that there are about 3 games for PSP.

11. Well I got one
Of couerse Sony is NOT expecting the use I am giving it... I loaded JPEGs of the art I am putting together for the game, and using it to show off... and yes I got a new game for it today... I dunno how good the game will be, but the environments look like nice pieces....

By the way the screen is incredibly clear.
