Sagan said it best - he was actually specifically talking about UFOs/aliens when he said "The more we want it to be true, the more careful we have to be." I'd call it one of the golden rules of skepticism - you have to be willing to aggressively question EVERYTHING, even those things that you want to be true.

I am ashamed that this man is a psychology researcher in the UK - though he is in a Department of Management, not of Psychology, let alone Biology which would be more appropriate to someone proposing evolution-based theories.
