What does one do with figs?
They are ripe, and I've heard you can do delicious things with them, but I don't know what those things are.

Thanks!

1. I don't care much for figs, but you might try this recipe.
I trust Mario Batalli to make some pretty good stuff.

or maybe some figgie pudding of fig newtons.

2. That's a good question. Might post it in the cooking/baking forum too.
A lot of experienced cooks there.

3. I like them dried. Fresh ones are too slimy for me.

4. I don't care for figs, but there are 4 fig trees in my yard, so I
usually make jam and preserves for friends and family. A friend told me that she likes to slice them in quarters, spoon on a dollop of marscapone cheese, top with chopped, toasted walnuts, then drizzle honey over all. It sounds good.

5. I don't think I've ever eaten a fresh fig,
but the dried ones are good, nutritious, and have a long shelf life.
We planted a fig tree (Black Fig) this Spring, and it is doing great.
We are going to add another variety next Spring.

There is a good article on drying fruits and veggies in the current (July/August) issue of Countryside.

http://www.countrysidemag.com/issues/92/92-4/dry_it_youll_like_it.html

The current issue of Mother Earth News (August/Sept) also has a good article drying fruits.

Both these article can be accessed online. You may have to close a little subscription box first.

Last year, we froze stuff.
This year, we are canning and freezing.
We haven't started drying anything yet, but this process is definately in our future.

6. We just pick and eat them
I have a Brown Turkey fig, one of the few varieties that will grow in central Maryland. We eat them fresh from the tree, or cut them in half and have them with a piece of good cheddar cheese.

7. Sadly, I picked the first, and last, of the figs and made a KICKASS sammy
The WASTE!

But anyhow:

2 cups chopped figs with the skin on
2 chopped sweet onions
A hearty sprig of rosemary, minced
1/3 cup each gouda, fontina, and parmesan
4 pieces sliced sourdough bread
Butter

Cook the onions on low heat until they are BROWN. This will take a long time. Mix in the figs and rosemary, and cook until the figs are done.

Meanwhile, grate a MOUNTAIN of cheese.

Pile the cheese on the bread, and pile the onion/fig mix on top of that.

Grill that sucker until it's falling apart.

Get a knife, fork, and a pile of napkins, and ENJOY!
