I just bought the wood
for my square food gardening. I purchased enough to make 3 squares. I went to Home Depot and had them cut the boards in half (the 2x6's were 8 ft long). I also bought a bundle of lathe for the grids and some discount wood for frames for the cages to keep rabbits out.

That was a cost of just under $50.

Then I went to Agway and puchased a bale of grow mix for contractors and some garden cloth. That was about $43.00.

Today I go to the city's compost center to drop off a bunch of woody yard waste and pick up some buckets of compost and mulch.

Tomorrow, if it's not raining, we will construct the boxes, mix up my growing mix, prepare the areas it is going in and set them up.

I may have to purchase more grow mix. I couldn't find vermiculite mix, only the perlite mix and that will have to do.

I have the seeds and some seedlings started for my tomatoes. They are still very small-- only the two starter leaves. I am going to grow a square of three sisters (corn, beans and squash). The other square will be of lettuces and some nasturtiums/marigolds. The third will be tomatoes, basil and peppers. Then I will rotate the lettuce square to something else.

I also have containers I plan to fill with mint, carrots, potatoes, cucumbers, beets. I'll probably go broke getting more growmix. I am so excited. I know this might be a bit late to start but it is cool up here in upstate NY and we usually get a late frost in May. I think we have gotten it but it is in the 50's today. I always heard, just start the garden, whenever you do is is the right time to start.

1. Sounds like fun
I am really enjoying my garden. It is my first. I will surly keep better records next year hehe.

I basically have 4 squares in garden area, a 12 foot flower bed, and an herb box that I don't remember what I planted where. Each bit of growth will be like christmas :D

2. You have some work ahead of you.
But the results will be fabulous! You can build frames for over the beds out of PVC and then wrap them with sheet plastic when it starts to get a little nippy in the fall. That way you will have a longer grow season and get extra produce, even though you are starting a bit late.

3. Or check craigslist
for old shower doors and wood frame windows that folks are trying to unload. We're going to try to have cold frames through the winter!

All this gardening stuff is exciting! :bounce:

4. I hope all that works for you!
Nothing like watching the garden grow! When we planted our first garden, we used to stand on the front steps and say, "You can see the beans from here!" when they first starting pushing through the soil. That quickly turned into the house joke to the point where I found a pic of an astronaut out of the space station on a space walk with the earth in the background and put a cartoon balloon over his head as if he were saying it, too! LOL

Gardening is so rejuvenating for the soul, too! Wishing you much luck! :hi:
