I've planted several smoke trees (Cotinus coggygria) from different suppliers. They leaf out wonderfully but don't seem to bloom at all. I thought maybe that they weren't getting enough light, but I noticed that my neighbor across the road has his in full sun and it doesn't smoke either. There are some spectacular bushes near here, so they do well in this area. Do I have male trees or do they need to get to a certain age or what?
Most plants that have too much nitrogen will produce abundant foliage at the expense of the flowers. You can try calling your local extension service to see if they have any ideas. They may have come across this problem in your area and have some ideas on what to do about it.
