I had an encounter with her a few years ago. I told my mother about it saying that I was puzzled by the vision of a beautiful Asian woman. Then she said perhaps the relationship is with an ancestor who the family called the Chinaman from about a century ago who settled in Africa, so the relation is in his genes. Surprise. Surprise. Then a few years later, I was at my cousin-in-law's house and I told her about the vision and she identified her saying, "That's Kwan Yin," and then brought out a little statue that a Vietnamese friend had given to her. She felt moved to give the statue to me and I love looking at her beautiful serene face.

Here's a link with some information. I've always viewed her as the Eastern version of Mother Mary...an energy of compassion and mercy. It's the one god/goddess that I don't have a statue of somewhere in my home, so that's on my wish list, too. :)

That was really comprehensive. Lots to absorb about her. One link I find interesting is that she is the protector of seaman and fisherman and my ancestor was definitely a sailor!

12. The tigers gate

is what one passes thru when they have cleansed oneself of all karma and ended the cycles of sahmsara.Its the entrance to the land of the buddhas.
It was at this gate where she made the decision to stay here and reincarnate as a bhodisittva.
When seen from this side one sees the gate flanked by carp.The other side has tigers flanking the gate.
This is what was taught and shown to me by the master of my school.
