Anyone here have or know someone who has synesthesia?
I have a friend with synesthesia. When people talk, she sees colors. Certain words have a specific color, too, like my name is red to her. I've often wondered if it enhances psychic abilities.

Does anyone here have any experience with this? I think it's fascinating.

1. I saw a 60 mins spot about an autistic man who can see the shapes

of prime numbers. It lets him do wicked math in his head. It was amazing to see.

I've also spoken with people who experienced synesthesia while they were on psychedelics, including pot.

Stanton McDonald-Wright is an early american painter who studied in Paris at the turn of the (20th) century and developed a discipline called 'synchromy' that assigned colors to musical notes. Then his paintings became musical pieces, kindof. It's really nice. Beleive it or not I can't find one of his paintings online.

This is brave and maybe obnoxious but I'm going to ask anyway: would you please ask your friend what color my name 'crikkett' is? Then I can change my avatar's color to match.

(OK to say no by the way)

Thanks in advance to you and your friend!!!

2. When I hear music, I see colors and images
funny thing is, if the music is bad, my art is sort of off kilter too. I have spoken to musicians who say that what they see induces music, and that art has music in it. When I look at my art, I can hear what music was playing when I drew it, as if the memory is contained in the shapes.

3. I knit, sew, crochet, make beaded jewelry, and do counted cross-stitch
and all usually in front of the tv. I can pick up a project I did years ago and recall what I was watching when I made it. It's not synesthesia, but just a trick of memory, like how certain aromas will bring up memories.

7. OMG I do that too!
I have to be very careful what I'm watching (or what music I'm listening to) when I'm beading, sewing, or cross-stitching, because I feel that I put that energy into whatever I'm making. In other words, no horror movies or misogynistic music.

8. You are absolutely right about that

I think when we craft, we 'weave in' whatever energy we put out at the time into the piece, so we have to be careful what we watch or listen to. In fact, I avoid horror or excessively violent movies anyway, especially in a theater, because the group experience of movie watching raises energy from the group and sends it out into the Universe. When one sits in an audience full of people who are frightened by what they see, that fear is released. However, when watching a funny movie, all of the positive energy from laughter is released, too, and we know how healing that is.

In the book The Mists of Avalon, I recall Morgaine embroidered a scabbard cover for Arthur, weaving in protective spells as she did so. It wasn't until the scabbard was destroyed or damaged (I can't remember which) that he was able to be harmed. Also, in the movie Like Water for Chocolate, the young female protagonist would cook for her family and whatever emotion she was feeling would go into the food and the family would experience that, too. When her sister stole the man she loved, she got back at her by putting her hatred and resentment into the food, causing her sister to gain weight and become flatulent.

10. Ditto for me...
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 12:05 AM by SocratesInSpirit
except I do collage art! I also write, and I always have to have music on in the background (I listen to movie soundtrack scores, which are very evocative). I write a lot of paranormal/supernatural stuff, with heavy doses of romance, so I'll play soundtracks such as Sleepy Hollow, the Illusionist, What Dreams May Come, etc., which sets the mood nicely. :)

I always thought it would be interesting to be a synesthete - ever since I read about it years ago, I was intrigued.

5. Actually letters and words do have colors for me
and I do see colors when people talk, now that you mention it. No one really talks about this so I am not used to paying that much attention to it. Perhaps it indicates picking up a wider spectrum of information, in another sense.
I did not know what it was called. The name Love Bug= Love =yellow Bug=blue for me.

9. Coolness!
Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 11:27 PM by Love Bug
It sure sounds like you have it! Yellow and blue together is one of my favorite color combinations and I wear those colors together all the time. It's nice to know my 'handle' coordinates with that!

When you see the colors, do you see them in your mind, or with your actual eyes, like color coming out of someone's mouth? Or is it just an impression?

13. I see colors with my mind' s eye.
But I know that while doing art and crafts, gardening, cooking we go into alpha state, and alpha is much more receptive and timeless, where the veils become very thin. If you wish to see energies, it is easier when your vibrations are raised :)

6. I have it
My mom does too. We like to torment each other with it.

When I am out with my mom shopping I will grab a shirt or something else with this particular color of chartreuse on it and it'll make mom queasy she'll go ooh and wince. Than later when I am not expecting it,she'll grab a pair of pants of a particular putty like color and say Look at THIS..and I'll get queasy and shield my eyes like a vampire at sunrise ,I'll wait, than I'll get something with that pepto bismol pink color she hates and she'll groan from her reaction to it,So of course she has and to get me back,So she'll get a particular yellow and it'll be in my eyes zapping my head for a few minutes. We do it as a way to razz each other, it's a game we do with each other's synesthesia. It's rather entertaining.

I once threatened to get mom this car our neighbor had, in that PINK mom hates, she'd cringe whenever she drove past their house. One day I told her I would get that car,get the interior re-done in that particular snot yellow chartreuse, and her imagination alone got a reaction..
lulz.

Anyway yeah I got it, my therapist tells me it is because my unconscious is very close to my conscious mind and my brain works different because of this relationship .I see subliminals easy and letters look like chicken scratch before they"snap" into letters.
I hear songs, taste food or look at something I get color flashes tastes and whatever. There are certain colors I will NOT use in my art because it causes me bad reactions like it tastes bad, feels bad, or gives me a bad emotion to look at it.

11. As a kid I would see colors when music played
The last time I remember it happening I was sitting on my bed and a song came on and I told my sister that the song was a beautiful green color. (I thought all people saw the colors when music played) She told me I was crazy and the look on her face was awful. I tried not to see the colors after that. I just ignored it and now I don't see them anymore.

As an aside, most of Led Zeppelin's songs were very dark colors, they were creepy to me just because of the colors.

12. I see numbers and letters in color
Ever since I can remember, I've associated specific colors with specific numbers and letters. This has helped me memorize phone numbers, etc. by remembering a pattern of colors associated with them. I had no idea what this was until I read an article in the Washington Post about it a few years ago.

16. Memory experts often have synesthesia.
A very good book written about a Russian memory expert goes into this to a prettty good extent: I believe the name of book and author are THE MIND OF A MNEMONIST by a Russian psychologist named Luria I believe.
