Footsteps
Last night, while I was preparing dinner, I heard footsteps - heavy work-boots footsteps, and I thought my brother, who is visiting from abroad was coming to the kitchen. The dogs barked looking towards the hallway. - Nothing - nobody living in this house came. After investigating - no one was in the hallway at that time.

I guess I have to do a proper clearing.

What kind of clearing does anyone do? I know about the sage...anything else you can think of?

I'll check back in tomorrow.

Good Night

1. What I do
I use a smudge stick made with sage or 3 sticks of incense and go room to room spreading the smoke as I go. I also invite any beings of divine light and divine love willing to help to please clear and transmute anything that is harmful in the home and the land it is upon. In situations when I suspect a harmful entity is present I ask that whatever beings of light have that entity's highest good as it's intention to please remove it to a place where it can do no further harm and be offered help to bring it to the light. If I suspect a confused spirit I still call in it's highest guides to help it be healed of whatever caused it to get stuck and send them Reiki to relay to it if it is willing to accept.

You can also use blessed salt water (add salt to water and ask your higher power(s) to bless it) and sprinkle around. If you like play music while you clear, sing and dance to happy songs to increase positive energy. Also remember when you clean house you can use the energy of your intention to sweep away anything harmful.

2. Sage is good
When clearing a house of negative influences, I follow a ceremony given to me by my Order. It involves sprinkling water and using a candle.

From the way you described it, I don't think you got a feeling of dread when you heard the footsteps. If you did, smudging with tonk would be appropriate, as the smell drives away evil influences.

3. Sea salt or Kosher salt left on the thresholds for a day or so especially during
Full & New Moons is another traditional method of clearing in addition to burning sage.

This thread just reminded me of an old exchange for which I've been plagiarized.

My eldest god daughter asked me when she was around 3 or 4. . .

"Why do we have souls on the bottom of our feet?"

I said "So the gods can walk in our footprints."

4. Sage or incense, sea salt (or salt water), powdered iron
I used to do this with my covenmates when we were asked to do a housecleaning (also have done it by myself): I usually start in the basement (or whatever lowest level) and, starting in the east, go in a deosil (clockwise) direction, sprinkling sea salt or sea water and powdered iron across the threshold of every door and window. Use the sage or incense smoke to "draw" a banishing pentagram (upper right point to lower left point etc.) over the window, asking all incorrect energies to leave, then an invoking pentagram (upper left point to lower right point etc.) in the same spot, asking beneficial energies to enter and protect your home. Go from the lowest floor to the highest floor (so you're moving in a corkscrew direction) always turning deosil, even when you're just reaching for something on your left; you should feel incorrect energies leaving through the roof. Good luck! :hi:

5. great rituals
thank you all!

I have yet to find time to do it...I did not feel any harm, but whoever it is needs to find his/her way home..
Usually I see, more than hear - but, wow that was so unusually clear...
Even though i know the history of this house back to the late 50's when it was built and the area before the tract went up...I don't know who it could be, so I can better help.

6. can you look up old newspaper articles?
Especially obits? They might help--or at least tell you if there was an accident of some sort connected to the house. Using a pendulum can also be helpful in giving you direction to which documents to search.

7. You can simply surrender it up to your favorite deity or saints to cover and they will.
In addition, though it isn't really necessary if you do the above, look for a banishing ritual. If you go that route, visualize rain, lots of rain, coming down on you when you're done otherwise the energy keeps leaving you.

9. thanks, Metta
the other night it suddenly occurred to me it may be some "thing"(s) that we have here..
like the headhunting sword, my mother received from some indigenous peoples. She may also have some other items.
I will envision the rain, thanks.

:)

10. Saging your home will remove negative influences
but if the entity doesn't view itself as negative, I don't know that it will leave. You may need to tell it how to and that it must go as this is your house now. I have an acquaintance that is having a difficult time right now with an entity that does not want to leave her home. She has seen him. She has told him he needs to leave and he hasn't, in fact, he poked her shoulder. She is getting aid from some women (a medium and a shaman) who do house clearings. If this is an entity, you might need to do this, or it could be an echo or energy pattern that is left from some emotionally charged incident. In that case, the sage/smudging, the salt, amethyst geode, candles, and perhaps some sweet grass with intention and requests for assistance from your guides and angels will do the job.

With items, you can use your kinesiology to determine if there is anything (old energy patterns) attached to them.
