Wildfire in Sedona, AZ.....please send prayers
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 10:22 AM by Desertrose
Hi Guys...this is really bad. Could use all the uplifting prayers for help in any & all forms to stop this fire from taking hold in Oak Creek Canyon.

• #1 priority fire in the US.
•Over 1800 acres of pristine wilderness burned.
•Oak Creek Canyon threatened- Nat'l Geographics pick for #1 scenic drive in the US.
•over 600 firefighters on the scene
•more than 450 homes & business evacuated
•temps about 100º...humidity about 8%

Some links- fire,
another view, helicopter dump, long view.
The whole slide show is quite incredible....

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0621BrinsFire21-ON.html">article

This is my home and waking every morning to a wall of smoke and knowing what is happening so close by is really heartbreaking. I have been lucky and haven't had to evacuate...but I have a lot of friends who may lose homes and businesses...plus all the forest critters.....and the beautiful sacred land...

So.... any good vibes..visions of rain (no thunderstorms please!) ...cooling temps...higher humidity ...would be ever so gratefully accepted.

I am in a wildfire prone area myself and know when fire is burning somewhere just by looking at the eerie light it casts over a large area...

I pray for Sedona - I pray for you - I send you our coastal fog

7. I am saying prayers for you and everyone in that area. I visited
Sedona several years ago. I even bought a magnet from there which is on my refrig. It's a small piece of pottery a little larger than a golf ball with a cork in the top of it. I could put money in it if I wanted.

Sedona is BEAUTIFUL! I hope you stay safe!!!

15. That's a holy land.
It was already challenged by the demands of a suddenly large human population and commercial development. I'll pray for safety of life and limb for firefighters and residents, and that flora and fauna return quickly after this brutal purification by fire.

My husband and I have fond memories of West Fork. Sedona truly is a blessed place.

21. Thurs 6-22 update....and thank you EVERYONE!!!
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 12:07 PM by Desertrose
Hi everyone and a big thank you for all your prayers & concern.

Another smoky morning at my place here at the base of Thunder Mt.in Sedona. ( I am pretty sure I will have smoke flavored tomatoes from my garden this year.)

Things are still very much touch & go here...yesterday Gov Janet (Napolitano) came to Sedona to fly over the fire & talk at a residents meeting. (Didn't go cause space was limited & it was more for the evacuees.)

Here's a link to the latest from azcentral.com.

Its up to about 3300 acres, 700+ fire crew on the scene including numerous hotshot crews & helicopters. Hoping they bring the big tankers back today to help with Sterling Canyon fire control. These are the ones that drop this bright orange "slurry" that really helps put the fire out.

Yes, it did jump the northern perimeter yesterday which is not good- really don't want this moving up the canyon rim as it would tend to just burn up & down the edges and there are a lot of homes nestled among the huge ponderosa pines. The terrain is practically vertical in most areas except the canyon floor where 89A runs.

They did hold the fire at bay at 89A near the Dairy Queen- they set backfires which basically burns the fuel before the fire can get to it and as there is nothing to burn, the fire dies back on itself. Which is good. The bad thing is that this fire has so many "fingers" licking up & down the sides of the canyon that it makes it very difficult to fight and stop the fire from spreading!

Looks like they are just letting Mt Wilson burn- rugged terrain & no homes. Sterling Canyon however, must be contained as it leads to not only homes but to an incredible wilderness area.

Everyone in town is affected...we are living in a smoky sea from late evening til the sun heats things up & the smoke lifts somewhat usually mid-late morning. Each day there is more smoke. (The arial shots really are quite impressive! buttes & mesas rising from a smoky sea!) But more than dealing with all this is the love for the area which is what drew most of "Sedonans" us here in the first place. This area of redrocks is like no other place...and especially Oak Creek Canyon...a national treasure to be sure, and in a way, I feel it is the true heart of Sedona and it connects us in a very deep way...

(If you're interested, here's a bit more info about Sedona.)

Some photos...smoky vista
another view
helicopters
firefighters
What will be left on that first drive up through the canyon??

More photos....lots of "fuel"(aka trees) burning.
rugged terrain
Fire into canyon[br />
As you see...there are a lot of photos....the slideshows have a lot more...

again...thank you, thank you, thank you for all your prayers , concern and suggestions. It is really cool to know how many of you guys have visited and/or feel connected to this place too.
:grouphug: love you all.
Peace DR

Will keep you updated...this may be going on until we get our monsoon rains in a few weeks...*sigh* ...such is life in drought stricken AZ during global climate changes....

25. Just Returned from your Beautiful Sedona
yesterday. My husband and I go once or twice a year. Our hotel was only a mile and a half from the fire at one point and we could see the flames on the ridge. We have been praying, sending energy and raising the frequency of the area since Sunday when we attempted to drive down 89A from Flagstaff (we come this way on purpose to enjoy the beauty of Oak Creek Canyon) but were diverted to I-17.

We have been moved to tears watching this fire burn. Hopefully the spirits that watch over Sedona will take control of this fiery "cleanse" and contain it to only sparse areas where no homes, businesses or wilderness areas run. I believe that they have done so thus far.

Desert Rose, we are sending you love and light.

29. Prayers coming your way
Sedona is one of the most beautiful and most peaceful places I have ever been. I found it far more spectacular than even the Grand Canyon. When I last visited Sedona, it was very dry. The potential for devastation is just heartbreaking. I am going to visualize clouds, a long slow rain and those dry creek beds running full of water.

Thank you for all these wonderful thoughts and prayers and good vibes and :hug:

Things are much better today...have been getting better since late last week with a few flareups. Our morning smoke is way better- even went for a walk again yesterday morning.

All in all I think everyone's powerful "magical mojo" paid off for us...makes me realize that Sedona is a special place not only because of the land, but because of the people here, too....

Thank you firefighters!!!

Hotshots get a big thanks, much more

SEDONA - Thank you is not enough.

Not when strangers are working around-the-clock to save a community that most of them don't even live in.
Or when those strangers somehow manage to rein in a ravenous wildfire without losing a single life, or a single home.
Hundreds of Sedona residents like Cummings are flooding firefighters with everything from socks and T-shirts to coffee and homemade cookies, free massages and spiritual healing.

Firefighters battling the stubborn Brins Fire that has been ripping through Oak Creek Canyon for more than a week say they have never seen such a massive outpouring of support.

"When it gets to your community, when it touches your friends, that gets to your heart," Cummings' wife, Barbara, said. "To know people are willing to give their time, effort and energy to help our community, to save our canyon, this is so wonderful."

At Red Rock High School, where firefighters have set up their base camp, boxes and bags of goodies spill from underneath a tent. There are stacks of jeans, boxes of T-shirts and socks, snack packs of granola bars, cookies and Lifesavers. Baby wipes. Travel-size deodorant. Cough drops. Shaving cream. Toothpaste. A 4-pound bucket of Red Vines licorice.

Somebody left rosemary mint shampoo in one box. Someone else stapled notes reading "You guys are unbelievable! Thank you" in childlike scrawl to snack-size bags of Teddy Grahams, Fruit Roll-Ups and other treats. Some of the notes were in Spanish.

"You look at this and you almost start to lose it," said Gary Johnson, spokesman for the Sedona Fire District. "You know you're appreciated."

Signs thanking firefighters are a common sight throughout Sedona. On a board at base camp, residents have penned messages of appreciation:

" Thank you is not enough. Thanks for all your efforts in keeping us safe. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your hard work and dedication."

(more at link)

I made a sign and have seen SO many signs everywhere...it is just so amazingly cool.
Everyone is being so great about this...we know we are very fortunate that this fire didn't go roaring up the canyon. Most of my friends say that Sedona just got a big cleansing smudge!

They are saying 50% contained- which does not men the fire is out...only that there is a fire line around the perimeter. We got some terrible winds yesterday (50+ mph) and the fire lines held.(I think they were spared the worst of them.) Anyhow...there definitely are angels working overtime for us!!!

For stats here is the Coconino Nat'l Forest Fire page which has some pdf maps etc.

Thanks again - everyone. :yourock:
This whole area had prayers from all over the planet and I know they made the difference. It is affirmation to me how powerful we "humans" really are, ya know?

We now have a bit of moisture flowing in and if we get past the "dry thunderstorm" phase of the monsoons and get real "juicy"...we should be ok.

***big sigh of relief***

And thank you for that report on the firefighters - it takes a LOT of courage to fight a fire under such terrible conditions. They are doing truly noble work, trying to save one of the most beautiful places on Earth; I'll never forget the beauty of Sedona, where you can feel and see Eternity with every breath, look and touch.
We'll keep praying until that fire is OUT!

36. Most of the firefighters are Native Americans
which kinda makes sense as they are the ones who have been caretaking this land -in a good way:) for quite sometime now.

They seem to have great courage and physical strength & stamina to do this job....and what a rough job it is...carrying equipment, packs, food suplies... all in heavy gear! AKK!

I was out again this morning and there are even MORE signs! It is just very gratifiying to see how aware and grateful the community is. We love this area- the one thing we ALL have in common- whether billionaires or immigrants...conservatives or liberals. Pretty damn neat.

:loveya:
DR

I see big puffy white clouds looming on the (Mogollon) Rim..am hoping the air is "juicy enough" to make real rain, not "virga" (rain that never reaches the ground) and those dry t-storms. We need a dewpoint a bit higher (around 55º-we are currently around 46º).

Thanks again guys for all the good vibes:)
