Other Tarot Interpretations
Every morning I select and meditate on a tarot card. Two mornings in a row I've drawn Nine of Swords. I know my own feelings about this card, but I was curious as to how others feel/interpret this card?

1. I don't like it.
I understand it means a very hard time, fighting a losing battle. I'd like to know whether there is a positive spin to the card.

2. I associate it with guilt and fear.
I can't say it is my favorite card to see, but I also see it as more of a heads up than any kind of external event.

In many of the decks, (Rider Waite as an example) the card shows a person sitting up in bed with the swords behind them. The swords are not contacting the person, nor are they actually doing anything except hanging out and bothering the person. Most of the time, the Nine of Swords does not show what exists at the moment, but what could be if the situation continues or that something is hanging on from the past.

I see it as being indicative of stuff that keeps you awake at night. Its the old issues that you haven't resolved yet, or it is guilt that you are either working thru currently or have already conquered (depending on where the card falls in the spread. In the context of the past then it could well be a positive card--you put some horrible burden aside or resolved an issue that has been troubling you.

I dunno--maybe my attitude about the cards is a funny one, but no one card is ever completely negative or positive, IMO. It always has to be seen in the context of a reading.

In this case, since it was a single card meditation. I guess I'd have to ask about what happened on those days when you drew the card?

Were you dealing with some kind of guilt or some kind of old problem?

Were things from your past (like old projects laid aside, maybe?) coming up and tapping you on the shoulder begging for renewed attention?

Were you working to understand how your past decisions brought you to where you are now?

Were you carrying an old resentment for someone and working to let it go?

Single card meditations are a great exercise, but they are so deeply personal that it is tough for me with my limited abilities to really give you any more illumination than to ask you questions...

Brightest blessings. I hope you find what you seek.

3. another way to look at it
I try not to let my assumptions about the card get in the way too much. So, pulling a card for meditation doesn't necessarily suggest anything about me or my current situation, unless I insist on it. I like to meditate on a card by considering the associated attributions as well as the so-called "meaning". Kabbalistic, astrological, metaphysical, alchemical attributions are all symbolic of different realities that we humans move through or are touched by in the course of our lives. Perhaps meditating on a time or event in my life that resonates with the card I pull might give me new insights into where it's brought me today.

Nine of Swords? - During the course of my life, as well as just today, what's been my relationship to things like illness, suffering, cruelty, pain, despair, malice, oppression and deceit? What about my response to these things that I've experienced or witnessed in the world as much as in the microcosm of my self? The positive spin on a card like this for me is that it's a station on the way - a brief snapshot from the course of an evolution, not necessarily a fixed judgment or statement about a manifested reality at the moment. When I look at it, the entire book of Tarot is truly operational in every moment, in every dimension. We humans are that complex; that exquisite; that angelic...dare I say godlike?

So there's always an evolution going on somewhere in my life that includes any of the elements I choose for meditation. I ask myself, "Where is this evolution leading? How can I experience and learn from it subjectively in this moment? How can I give to others what I'm learning from this? What meaning will this card have for me at the end of this life experience?"

Meditations like this help me turn corners.

Peace.

J.
