The Next 5 Months, and the Next 500 Years
The Next Five Months and the Next 500 Years
November 19th, 2005

By Steven McFadden

I had the edification of sharing lunch this week with Hosteen Leon Secatero. We sat down together during an honoring ceremony held at the Albuquerque Museum in New Mexico.

Leon, an elder from the Canoncito Band of the Navajo, talked with me about the next 500 years, and also about the next five months.

Our conversation was sparked by the recent pronouncements of Sydney Has No Horses, a Lakota Medicine Man. Mr. Has No Horses spoke on October 17, 2005 to a tribal council meeting on the Cheyenne River Reservation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

According to widely disseminated internet postings, at that meeting Mr. Has No Horses declared “within six months, we are going to be living in a hell of a world.” He told of visions that warned about a tsunami hitting the West Coast, about Yellowstone’s Super Volcano erupting, about mammoth storms and earthquakes that would strike, about a meteor that would smash into the earth, and more.

2. For real
But the nice thing to remember is freewill. We can change things.

3. This paragraph here is basically what Jared Diamond says ...
in his book "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed".

When I interviewed Don Alejandro for my book “Legend of the Rainbow Warriors,” he told me that indigenous cultures around the world hold in their oral traditions an understanding that civilizations have risen on Earth many times in the past, and then fallen. He said that these civilizations fell apart primarily because they developed and employed technology without wisdom or respect for nature; then the natural world became profoundly unbalanced. “Once again,” he said, “we are in a period of time when technology dominates life and is generally being applied without wisdom.”

4. The problem with that theory is that it comes from fear.
Fear of what we don't understand fully (computers, radar, satellite) and fear of being controlled by other than godly forces (the government, the gestapo, etc.) and it also fails to take into account that nature, which cannot be controlled, cannot also be stopped.
Of course we will face natural disaster that we cannot control. But it won't necessarily result in our civilization being lost.
Natural change can be swift, but the thought that a tsunami, meteor colllision and Yellowstone caldera eruption would happen all at once is just hogwash. I hope.

6. Unless....
...the impact triggers the tsunami and caldera.

Time to dust off the Y2K contingency plans?

7. Interesting, but.....
and no disrespect intended here to our many belovedand wonderful elders.....but my heart tells me that much has been mitigated...perhaps the drastic earth changes I've been hearing about for the past 40+ years do not have to come about...or happen in such a drastic manner.

Also...creating our own world and being where we exactly need to be can also change what we experience.

I am holding things to be most benefical to all and also least harmful to all. Best I can come up with...aside from staying out of fear as much as possible..... :)

8. The focus and climax of the article is not doom and gloom
but rather building for the next 500 years.

The article acknowledges the dire predictions, and the harsh climatic and political realities, but the focus is on moving through this to begin laying the foundation for the next 500 years -- a unit of time in many indigenous calendars (520 years).

10. You are right...my apologies...it does indeed focus on foundation
(I should never post in haste..where was my brain...I'll blame it on too many paint fumes.... sorry :banghead: )

Its a really good article & I bet the interview was fun...and enlightening as well.

“The journey we are beginning now is for the next 500 years. What will be the sacred path that people will walk over the next 500 years? Even in the midst of all the changes taking place and all the things falling apart, we are building that foundation now. That’s something important for us to remember and to focus on. If we don’t do it, no one else will.

“All anyone needs to do is look around,” Leon said. “We have been destroying nature systematically for many decades. Now nature is destroying us with winds and storms and earthquakes and volcanoes. All that was known a long time ago. The elders have been telling us for years that this would come. Now it’s here and it’s hurting us.

“We need to take a close look at this and then really come to terms with ourselves,” Leon said. “To move ahead into the next 500 years we must leave some things behind or they will contaminate or even eliminate the future. We cannot go forward if we keep destroying the earth. But we must also ask, what is good and healthy and helpful? Those good things can be part of our foundation, part of our pathway into the next 500 years.”

I agree the message is of hope and the fact that WE are the ones who can make the changes happen...we are the only ones and it must be done in a good way - by honoring the earth and all creatures on her...something that many have forgotten and that has gotten us to the place we are today.

A really good & timely message ...thank you for sharing it . :)

 You can spank me for my badness next time you see me, SH....

Beware, you may be stricken from my Christmas Card list, or suffer even worse calamities, if such can be imagined.

9. Thanks
This is an important message. For me there were two things I particularly paid intention to, the need to build a new foundation and, the fact that we must become the leaders and deciders of destiny here on planet earth for ourselves and those to come. What way will we choose to go; follow the path we've been on or a way that honors not only each of us but the planet as well?

13. Hmmm? Never heard of the Seventh Sun. Do you mean Seventh Son?
That's a common term.

Lots of Native groups say we are in the Fourth Sun (World, or Epoch) and heading into the Fifth Sun (epoch). But have not ever heard anyone speak of the Seventh Sun -- though I suppose it could be a frame of reference for some people.
