Reiki
I am planning to take Reiki instruction in a few weeks, my husband might even do the same (after his recent health problems he has awakened on his own to alternative health).

I have had this on my mind as something I needed to do for a long time and I am so looking forward to it. It is one of those things that just pops into my head as a TO DO every so often. It seems as if something is telling me this will really be a good thing on my path.

My Sister and Brother-in-law took Reiki instruction some years ago and she told me that a neighbor of theirs told her husband that if you use Reiki you can let bad entities in, all that grave warning stuff like he was about to surround himself with Ouija boards or something, and this guy was supposed to be into alternative health. I have never heard of such and don't believe it in the slightest, to me it sounded like someone wanting to be the "authority" and act like only he had the answers and others had better listen to HIM. Sad, they were so enthusiastic when they took Reiki and now he won't even practice at all because of this dork. Oh what that Christian fear training growing up will do to us. I have to watch it all the time myself.

1. A proper reiki instructor will teach how to protect yourself
But you knew that. :)

Sounds like the neighbor is one of those fear-based boogers who thinks "de debbil gon' gitcha" if you do anything related to the spirit realm. I've gotten that lecture before, too--a lot of people learn this in traditional churches and feel compelled to "warn" spiritual practitioners or people who visit psychics/seers.

I'd be more afraid of reiki instructors who charge obscene amounts of money for their classes. Beware the greedy.

2. This guy really isn't outrageous
Compared to others I have priced in this area, this guy isn't bad, and he taught the lady we have been getting treatments from, so I feel like this opportunity pretty much fell in our laps. I had gone to some psychic workshops with another teacher in our area and she is very nice, but something didn't jive (couldn't put my finger on it), and she charges a lot more for the Reiki training.

I am wishing for clear sailing for a while so I can go through with my class. As most of you know, clear sailing hasn't exactly been my path of late, LOL!~ :D

4. I don't think so.
My Reiki Master told us that there is no way we can do harm to others with Reiki because the energy is naturally healing.

5. That's what I have read and been told also
I really feel like this guy my BIL talked to considered himself an alternative health authority and wanted to be looked up to by giving "dire" warnings.

I know many people who have been personally helped by learning Reiki, and then able to share with outers.

6. Yes
The more you use it, the more healing you receive for yourself. It's wonderful!

I started to learn "official" reiki--with the kanji and everything--but then segued into a form of hands-on healing which is essentially the same, without the kanji. IMO (DEFINITELY IMO), I've begun to feel that the trappings of reiki are nice if it speaks to you, but not essential to achieve the same ends. Again, !IMO!

8. I agree with you MG
From personal experience, I remember my Great Aunt Chloe was a natural healer -- hands on healing, and she had never heard of Reiki.

Reiki is a great tool, but isn't essential to healing.

7. For everyone here that's interested, here's a site I learned about years ago:
University of Reiki - Workshops
University of Reiki - About us

I know within the community of those that practice Reiki, there isn't a consensus in favor or not on distance learning. I don't have a problem with it myself, but know plenty that do. It's a preferential thing to me, even though I've only been attuned and not trained. I have been curious about the workshops in the above link; plenty of versions are represented :)

If nothing else, use it as a means to find the types that resonate with you the most and then find a teacher near you in that variety :D
